i have 1987 4x4 6.9 diesel 4 speed . starter went out today ! what i need to know is will a starter out of a 460 automatic work ???? its my parts truck same year . please let me know thanks .

they are two completely different animals.

Look at the size of the battery cable for the diesel starter, then compare it to that of the big block - yeah, our starters are way way different, you need a diesel-specific starter. I remember something about an internal gearset being desired when getting a new starter, and also that you should only get a starter by Mitsubishi or Nippon-Denso.

thats for sure unless you have a rebuilder you really trust. i've got a mitsubushi, is a couple years old and still works like a charm, fast and tough.
