high idle

Im not getting a high idle when I start my truck in the morning. It starts and idles at about 650 like usual. Im in south fl so it only gets cold once in a while in the winter months but I want to get it working before then. Im sure its also better to have to get the engine warmer faster. I guess the high idle solenoid is what I should look into but I dont know exactly where it is. I can test it and if its bad just replace it with a similar solenoid?

Also would it benefit us to wire in a switch to make it high idle when its warmed up and hot out? Like for idling for a while or something because iv always heard its bad to idle diesels for a while but have heard that a high idle is better for extended idling.

If you look at your injection pump, on the passenger side of it there is a lever, that's what the throttle pedal and the cruise control cables are attached to. In front of that lever/arm there is a cylindrical metal object roughly the size of a "C" battery, there is a small plunger coming out of that thing and pointing at your throttle lever - that fat cylinder is your high idle solenoid, and the plunger for it is adjustable with a 1/4" wrench. What you want to do first is turn the hex head of the plunger till it's like a hair away from touching the IP throttle arm - that position allows you for the highest idle the solenoid is capable of. To test the solenoid itself all you need to do is just run a long piece of jumper wire from one of the batteries to the spade-connector that's on the back of the solenoid - if the solenoid is good after you push some on the throttle arm it should click fairly loud in place, and the engine should start idling high like it should.

On your question about the manual switch - yes, you can install one, I have oni in my truck and I really like it - I don't idle for long periods of time, but whenever I'm jumping another diesel it's real nice to be able to bump up the alternator speed and current output.
