Fuel tank - pick up line questions

Okay, I took a few days off to go hunting, but since it's way too warm out today, I cut my hunting short to get a little work done on my truck. One of the things I wanted to do was work on the pick up lines in my fuel tanks. I can currently only use about 13 gallons out of the tank before I start sucking air. I dropped the front tank, and I have 2 steel lines that run down and end at the same point. One of them has a red rubber piece clamped on it that's about 1/2" long. I need to do a sanity check here. I'm assuming that the line with the red rubber piece on it is the return line, and the rubber piece is some kind of check valve. Is that correct? If so, then I'm assuming that my actual pick up line is laying in the bottom of my tank. That's okay, I figured it would be. I'm going to run to Advanced Auto and pick up some fuel line, and then to the hardware store for some screen so that I can start using all of my fuel.... I just want to make sure that I put the new hose on the correct line.

This is a huge topic on the forum...common problem...just do a search ...you should find lots and lots of advice.

Just add rubber hose over the end with a v notch cut into hose. Sme problem on both of my tanks 2 years ago. Put a new tank into truck last month and the rubber hoses were still good.

You can buy the internal filter screen for the pickup side from ford i found it about 2 weeks ago and ordered it. I will get the part number tonight and post so everyone know the part number and they only cost about 25 to 30 dollars or so depending on the ford dealer who says they can not get just that part but i beg to differ with them i will get the part number tonite i have it somewhere at home

You are correct the rubber piece is for the return line. And the "shower head" is probably in the tank.

My advice is to clean out the tank. I failed to be thorough and it haunted me for 1.5 years. I ended up replaceing the Fuel Tank Selector Valve twice since the pieces from the shower head managed to get into the FTSV and cause a failure.

Be thorough and do it right the first time!!!
