In preparation for the long ride, I decided it would be a good idea to get both tanks working again. I know a bunch of guys have done this already. So, aside from the fact that I will be taking a diesel bath, what do I need to know to make this go quickly & somewhat trouble free?

If your talking about the tank sending units its not a bad job on the front tank. You really don't have to drop the tank. Just get under the truck and stick your head between the driveshaft and the frame rail. You will see a metal spanner ring. Just use a chiesel or a screw driver and hammer to knock it towards the counter clockwise direction after you remove the return, supply and electrical lines. Then pull it up and out. Its just that easy. The electrical connection pulls up and not out the side of the sender. Just flip it up and alls good. The back tank is something that will require the bed removal or dropping of the tank... Sorry. :D

he is talking about the valve that switched between the tanks. Ford probably engineered some special tool for the fuel line?
But I have never done this, so I am really no help other than... Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

No, not right now. I'm trying to fix things that should have been done a long time ago. The only "improvment" I'll be making is a homemade cruise control so I'm not on the gas for 13 hrs. Here's the list:

Fix Radio antenna - Gotta have solid tune signal.
Install "cruise Control"
Install FSV......& hope that was my problem.
Find a decent tire to mount as a spare.
Top off all fluids - many leaks from many places.

Pack tool box
Charge up Impact Gun
Find my old CB & install
Find the bottle jack & throw it in the toolbox.
Pack essentials for the big truck ride home.

Gotta get all that done Saturday. cookoo Maybe tow cat or beretz will chime in. I know they both did this already. Seems I remember a few more too.

Well, I did the fuel tank selector valve. First, I would recommend spending a few extra bucks to get the Ford unit. The ones from NAPA work great, but the electronic connector doesn't interchange. You'd need the adapter, that is special order adn will set you back some extra time. What is happening? Is it not switching tanks? Leaking? Sucking from both tanks? If it is the later two, then you probably have a bad selector valve. If it is not switching tanks, I advise you to get your voltmeter, find which pins have voltage, then with teh key on, flip the switch....the voltage should reverse polarity. That is in one position, you should have +voltage, and when you flip the switch it should be -voltage. Really all the selector switch is is a double pole six connection switch. Travis helped me to understand mine and he's the best authority here on this sort of thing, but I digress, my problems were 1) selector valve sucking from both...2) no switchover from an electric problem. The switch is pretty durable, so you pretty mucha are looking at the valve or the wiring for your problems. I wound up rewiring the whole think and putting in a redneck type system. Its temepermental, but usually gets the job done.

Got everything but the belts. my problem is when I swtich from the front tank to the rear tank the truck runs normal for about a minute, then starts surging pretty hard then dies completely. If I switch back to the front tank it surges as it purges the air then runs fine. I thought I had a tank problem but Towcat seemed pretty sure it was the FSV after having the same problem IIRC.

I did get the ford part. Some thing I just won't cheap out on. very pricey though!!!

Double check the return lines. The front sender is easily done without removing the tank. The rear is more involved.

if you got the ford part, did you get the plastic clips for the tubing retainers? those are an "extra" item at the stealership.
Also, to reduce the shower of feul, park the truck facing uphill. that way the siphon action from the tanks is lessened.

If your very carefull, you can reuse them. I got lucky, got them off intact, and in good shape. Just don't force them to much.

scott-
there's two different sizes for the clips. good news in that they are also avalible at the local kargen's, AZ...etc. just look in the Motormite racks.
you will need both since the feed and return are different.
