excessive pressure in the cooling system

sounds like a cracked head. a lot of times when they build enough pressure to put into the overflow tank that is a good sign of a cracked head. i would remove the cyl heads, and look at the head gaskets very closely. then send the cyl heads of to a machine shop and have them tested. also take the head gaskets with you to the machine shop and get his take on the gaskets. you can tell a lot when looking at a head gasket.
Yes fix it now or FIX IT Later for more money.... don't ask how I know?

This is just to say thanks to all for the input and sympathy. I'm rather disgusted as y'all can imagine but have to do what has to be done. I'm eyeballing a local crewcab dually with a running 7.3 to transplant so that I have a daily driver while I work on converting the CC to 4x4 and then install the rerepaired 6.9. New thread will be started for the 4x4 conversion since I've never attempted that before.
