I have a fairly general question regarding black smoke on acceleration. The car is a 1981 VW diesel Rabbit Pickup. It starts well and has surprisingly good power but spews black smoke when accelerating whether winding it up tight in 1st gear or lugging up a hill in 4th.
At idle there is zero smoke of any color and the idle is smooth. At very light acceleration there is a little smoke but step on the gas and it blows out a black cloud.
I just bought this little rig and have no history on it. I assume it's the IP or the injectors. The compression seems to be excellent judging by the power and the engine instantly comes to rest when the key is turned off.
Could someone have "tweaked" the IP for more power? Will my extra Mercedes non-turbo injectors work on this (1.6) engine?
Any thoughts?
