Axle/gear questions

From what I can tell so far, the tallest gears available for the Excursion were 3.73. I've noticed that Randy's Ring and Pinion has 3.55 gears. What are the opinions on having 3.55/3.54 ring and pinion gears put into an Excursion? If I'm not doing any hauling with it (other than kids and groceries) is it going to destroy the trany? Can I expect a decent (10%) increase in mileage over say a set of 4.10/4.11 gears? Does anyone know of anyone who has tried this?

Also, I noticed that the Ex has a D50 front end. Is this the same D50 that's in my 93 F250? What I'm asking is are they interchangeable? If I find a D50 for the truck with the gears that I want, will it go into an Ex?

Also, my searches for gears for a 10.5 rear end would indicate that the 3.55 ring and pinion for a Sterling 10.25 will also fit a 10.5. Is that correct?

It is pointless to put 3:55s in place of 3:73s. The milage gain would be minimal if at all, and as you know, gears are not cheap.

The excursion does have a D50, but NOTHING like your TTB front end. I believe the gears are all that would be interchangable, but not 100% sure

That helps. I wansn't so interested in replacing 3.73 gears. I was more interested in replacing 4.10 gears. Still shopping around right now, and not sold on the Excursion at this point. If what I find has 4.10 gears, I would want to get them changed out to either 3.73 or 3.55. Since the vehicle would seldom, if ever, do any towing, It seems to make more sence to go with the 3.55. Gears are not cheap, and the labor for having them swapped is even worse, but when fuel hits $5 a gallon, any mileage gain would pay for itself quickly.
