How to work on in-place engine...

We keep cheap laundry detergent diluted to 30% on hand in a squirt bottle. If oil or diesel spills we put some on it quickly, then hose them off after a few minutes, it helps a lot. Dirty drain oil is the worst. Gotta scrub that. Diesel and gas do soften asphalt. Save your old cardboard and...

How to work on in-place engine...

$1300 and change for that. Ouch! I wish Harbor Freight offered one. Bezos has chinesium topside creepers for $250 but they sure look cheesy, bad welds in review pics, and some comments are brutal.

    2000 Excursion Limited 7.3 - 229,000 Miles - In KY near Frankfort - $20,500

The Centurion isn't really a vehicle, it's a rolling museum. Because they went entirely out of business, you're left up the proverbial creek when it comes to body parts. But man they are classy. You just would want to have a reliable backup vehicle to use while scrounging for parts. There's a...

    2000 Excursion Limited 7.3 - 229,000 Miles - In KY near Frankfort - $20,500

I'm a big guy too, 6'6" and remember a study in my fireman training a decade or so ago. Net/net is the taller you are, the more you're likely to suffer broken bones in a crash. OTOH, the heavier and larger your vehicle, the better off you are. The laws of physics will not be denied.

    2000 Excursion Limited 7.3 - 229,000 Miles - In KY near Frankfort - $20,500

That may be a 6.0 grill with the bottom trimmed off to fit. Why, I don't understand. I prefer the X grill. I would hold at this point. Don't give away your truck, you'll regret it. The truck market has gone way soft and we're going into a recession. Just drive less to save fuel, and be safe in...

DEI exhaust wrap vs other brands

It seems that DEI brand exhaust wrap has fans here. But it costs about 3x more than all the other brands, which also have favorable reviews. Here in the pic, for example, I have 3 rolls of 50' each, a total of 150' of wrap, for less than the price of one 50' roll of DEI. Does anybody know why...

Fuel filter light comes up what could be the cause?

Unclear to me from your post how many miles are on this filter. Did you stop driving it after 200, and it's been sitting there for 3 years? Could be green goop grew in there. Use Howes or another additive. I get IDI filters for about $6 by the box. I'd just change it. Take a look in the one...

Planning a cab off, got any suggestions?

We finally got a shop built. A new 12k Atlas lift is waiting for me. This will be my first cab off tuning with my own pudgy little hands instead of paying a buddy to do it. I used to wrench more when I was younger but when run your own business time is always short. I was just reading an FTE...

Starter mixed up at rebuild shop? Won't go in.

I'm confused by a starter for my 2003 F350 7.3 - Here is some background about why I'm confused. I read in this thread FTE that they all are interchangeable, which is what I had always thought. Then I read in this big thread FTE Y2K guy that the early OE starters are desirable. I took note. So...

    Time to defeat my FSS?

It's raining cold sideways now in Texas or I'd go check. But I don't think this Bully has Acc position. Even though it's XLT Lariat... In any case, she usually listens to Jack Spirko podcasts on her earbud, not the radio. Another reason she's a keeper. When SHTF, she'll still feed us.

    Time to defeat my FSS?

Bingo. She's given us four healthy kids, and I'm grateful. I choose my battles. I can fix the truck. Back when we dated she scraped the low nose of my car on a curb, backing up. Forgot that the front swings the other way when you back up and turn. I fixed that paint, and asked her to marry me...

    Time to defeat my FSS?

Two failed FSS here in 5 years. Must be my wife leaving the ignition on. I can't change her, but I can change the truck to the air choke shutoff method. There are a few FSS failures out here in a search, but not many. It's rare. Hey, it's another coincidence!

    Time to defeat my FSS?

The guys at Classic Diesel Design in San Anton TX live and breath them IPs. They have a 250cc version for sale! For reference, 238cc is good for over 1000hp in a 7.3 PSD. I bet they could answer your question. But ifn you was to ask me, I would call on my vast and deep experience from watching...

    Time to defeat my FSS?

My wife forgets everything and drives this 6.9 often. She likes it. So yeah, you can bet she left the ignition key on forever. And she'll do it again. Our daughter is a lot more mechanically minded. But then I had her changing brake pads and stuff like that with me when she was 5 ... She built...

    Time to defeat my FSS?

I just found this in my files from a few years ago. I got this here or on FTE, but the guy didn't know where I could buy one. This would work fine to shut off fuel. But that air vane shut off is even better because it will stop runaways too.

    Time to defeat my FSS?

By stock lift pump you must mean the mechanical one that runs off a camshaft lobe. I don't know its pressure but on gassers they're usually around 7 psi and fail often. I don't much like them. My mistake, actually I gave that 12-15 psi Facet pump to my son @Minty Ferd for his 7.3 because he...

    Time to defeat my FSS?

I've seen teardowns of Stanadyne pumps on themtube, but only remember seeing the throttle valve. Is that what you call the metering valve? Or do you mean the lever that shuts off fuel, sitting under the FSS cap? That was my original idea, to put a cable on that. But given we run electric lift...

    Time to defeat my FSS?

That looks like the perfect solution. Thank you, I had no idea such a device existed. I'd place it right at the snout mouth of the metal air filter housing, which won't collapse under vacuum. I think I'll put this on all three of our IDIs instead of replacing the FSS again. Just like electric...

    Time to defeat my FSS?

Once I had to choke out a 6.0 that was running away with turbo oil. Just stuffed my fist in the intake then a rag with my other hand. Skinned my knuckles, hurt a bit but saved the customer's motor. So .... Yes, I would like to have a cable shutoff in the cab. Blocking off air from inside the...

    Time to defeat my FSS?

I'm tired of that little sucker failing on me. I've already replaced it twice on our 1986 Bullnose 6.9 since I bought it in 2017. This last time I lost points bigtime with my wife, who was stranded under a railroad bridge on a little country road, barely any cell service. Of course she was...

Source for new negative battery cables

I pulled and saved all the boom power cabling out of my F550 when I removed the bucket / tool bed. The battery cabling that was in there is well done; crimped, soldered, sealed. If you let them crimp it on an anvil, then I think you'd just need to finish with a roll of solder and a little...

Tuning a 6.0, looking for your experience

Just noticed that this subforum is dead. Nobody's posted since July but me. I guess 6.0s are not big with this crowd. But this is the best IDI forum I've found.

    Something's gone sideways at Gearhead?

In 2019 I called Gearhead Tunes several times for the first 7.3 I tuned. Later after getting info, I purchased updated tunes from them to address a shifting issue where I was getting a double throttle chop instead of one chop. It was great to be able to talk to the guy who writes the tunes. I'm...
