The problem with new brake shoes and the parking brake.

Thanks for posting, I've been having some similar problems. Anyone know of a brand with no issues?

    20-50w oil

I've been using diesel rated 20w-50 amsoil aro for ~10years (or longer). Still starts well at 20F without the blockheater.

No wts light hard start then wts light easy start

It sounds like the GPC is malfunctioning even though it's new. There's a ground wire from the GPC that's worth checking to make sure it's a clean solid connection.

    Vacuum Warning Switch

That's how they seem to fail. There's a time delay inside and I think that's what actually gives up. Last one I got was in a wrecking yard, but it was off a Dodge diesel pickup, circa 1995. They are exactly the same, and usually newer. Tested about 5 bad ones out of Fords while at wrecking...

Has anybody sent in used oil samples?

For reference, my reports all had "<1%" in the fuel dilution column. 7% is pretty high. Here's an article on the subject: http://www.dieselhub.com/maintenance/fuel-dilution.html

Has anybody sent in used oil samples?

Here's the metal readings (PPM) from my last UOA with 5700 miles on the oil. Iron 13 Chrome 0 Nickel 0 Aluminum 7 Copper 0 Lead 14 Tin 0 Silicon 3 Sodium 0 Potassium 0 I like the lowest cost test from OAITesting (Amsoil) which is done at Polaris labs, and I've also used Balckstone...

    My 1st Blackstone-Labs report,

The lead could also be residual from an oil additive containing lead that was added in the past. Can't remember the brand, but there's at least one oil additive with quite a bit of lead that's supposed to plate-out and restore worn surfaces.

    Battery upgrades?

NorthStar makes the X2Power batteries at BatteriesPlus.com where the warranty may be easier and better. See https://www.batteriesplus.com/productdetails/sli31agmdp . That's a group 31 battery with 8mm threaded posts. The same battery in group 65 (fits without modification) with standard posts...

    Ughhhh!!

Years ago I replaced the water pump with a NAPA and as I was filling it up with coolant it started peeing out the weep hole!

Who sells a good glow plug controller?

Don't know where it was made. It fit like the OEM controller and works OK.

Who sells a good glow plug controller?

I have one from NAPA and it's been working fine for several years.

Oil Burning -- A potentail easy fix

My 7.3 has been seeing less miles over the last several years, and a lot of those have been short trips. And lately the oil burning has been about 1 qt per 1000 miles. So I figured that maybe the rings were sticking -- And decided to try adding a couple pints of Amsoil engine flush (FLSH) then...

    Should I buy some Amsoil?

I've used synthetic (Amsoil) in my 1988 F350 since it was new, currently 20w-50 ARO is in it. 20w-50 (diesel rated) appears to use less oil, and still starts well in winter without a block heater (10 degrees F is about the low here). Oil change interval has varied, but mostly ~5000 miles...

    Battery upgrades?

Odyssey AGM charging spec is 14.0 to 14.7 VDC (15.0 VDC max). I believe other AGM's are very similar. Not a problem charging from the alternator in-vehicle, but a big potential issue with many portable plug-in battery chargers. I've measured over 16 volts on a couple. I gave away all my old...

    Battery upgrades?

I hear you... 9+ years ago the Odyssey's were less expensive, that's why I went with the X2power this time ($261 each at my location). Hard to justify short term, but I've had it 29 years and no plan to sell it. Another plus for AGM's -- They don't have any corrosion issues, the original...

    Battery upgrades?

Actually each SLI65AGMDP X2Power AGM is $261. So it was $522 for two of them. That includes the 10% online discount at https://www.batteriesplus.com/productdetails/sli65agmdp Expensive batteries, but they are 930 CCA, 74AH, direct fit without modifications, and should last a long time.

    Battery upgrades?

I've had Odyssey AGM's for 8+ years, these worked very well, including some deep discharge use. One of the pair was about dead and it was running fine off the other -- didn't even notice until I did some pre-winter battery testing. Decided to try X2 AGM's from BatteriesPlus -- These tested...

Can I change a rear cylinder in a parking lot?

Suggest offering some bucks to someone at the college that's more experienced, and maybe with access to shops on campus.

    fan clutch.

Kevin, I did some testing about a year ago. Here's some notes I wrote down: The temperature measured below was from between the radiator and fan using a digital thermometer. RPM was measured with a optical tach. Ambient for both tests was ~67 F. Ford-Eaton (22 years young): Full engaged 180...

    fan clutch.

Rob, it doesn't need to be a hot day to do the test I wrote in the previous post. I've done it many times, 70F ambient is enough. With the truck standing still and the RPM's raised to 2000 the thermostat will eventually open wide and the hot air off the radiator should engage the clutch. Note...

    fan clutch.

Being able to turn it by hand is a good sign, not bad. In the summer it's pretty easy to test it by holding the throttle open to roughly 2000 rpm for a several minutes while looking down at the fan clutch. If you have A/C, turn it on to speed up the test. If the fan clutch is working you...

    Diesel + Hydrogen = WHOooaaa!

Thanks for that info, it's an interesting topic. Here's a related technical paper from a university in Bulgaria, it's the only one I've found on the subject. They had a separate hydrogen/oxygen source (not engine driven) and calculated a 14.8% increase in power, with 2.44% of that...

    Diesel + Hydrogen = WHOooaaa!

1800 RPM -- NOT idle RPM. I'd say that's about the same fuel flow you'd have going ~40 MPH on flat land at a bit lower RPM. You could also reduce the amperage and gas output to whatever is supposedly optimal, observing if there's a point where RPM's increase above that when switched off. You...
