    Good advice. There is a reason manufacturers use stainless; cost benefit is worth the extra expense. I remember when exhaust systems were replaced on cars several times in their lifespan, and a car's lifespan was much shorter then than now.

    I think its a really bad idea. I would not like the obstruction to your view and fumes especially at idle would be a serious concern.

    I used to use my air compressor and air tools all the time. Now I mostly use battery powered impact, just because its quicker and easier. There are some they have really impressive numbers.

    I don't even bother with getting the engine warm. I've done engine rebuilds where I put all the miles on, often in excess of 200k, and I've not once had a sludge issue.

    I went to a junkyard that had lots of f250 and up trucks. I checked them out while in the yard, fifth one had little play, and its now in my truck for several years, still the same play as in the yard.

    I would go over the engine with a stethoscope. Touch everything that has moving parts behind it. Head, block, water pump, front cover, ip, etc. Do it when its not making a noise so you have an idea of what everything sounds like through the stethoscope, and again when it makes the noise...

    Its your vehicle, you don't have to buy it back. You just agree to a value, and they deduct that from the check. Agree upon a value of the vehicle to deduct (you want low number) then the value of the truck (you want high). They will often have no problem with a low number for you to keep it...

    I buy local and from smaller shops. There is an ace hardware and a parts-plus that together carry most of what I need.

    Call a machine shop that does engine work. See if they work on your engine and get a price. Its much easier to have a professional do it right the first time, rather than pull and repair again for some screw up.

    Bolts will be fine for taking measurements. You will get more change in the dynamics of a running engine to worry about bolt vs stud for plastigauge measurements.

    I use solar on my small batteries (mower, waverunner), 2.5 watt size and it works great. Just got a 5w for an auto battery, as the 2.5 was just not enough. Its the route I would go, just make sure it is charged up first.
