    Black Smoke at Part Throttle

I've always been here but this is a new motor combination that I'm working with. I didn't have the problem with the old stock setup.

    Black Smoke at Part Throttle

Wow, I had no idea that there was such a sensor. Thanks. You're correct, I am in the SF Bay Area. I'm not sure about the exact RPM's actually. I'll have to look into it. Unfortunately, I'm not leaving the Bay Area for a couple of weeks. I want to say that if I'm around 1800 to 2200 it will be...

    Black Smoke at Part Throttle

I don't want to max the wastegate because I am concerned with reliably. I take my truck to the boonies. It's when the motor winds up that the smoke goes away. Lower RPMs under load creates thick black smoke.

Thanks Wes I'll try turning it up to max at 11 and see how that works.

    Black Smoke at Part Throttle

I'm throwing a lot of black smoke as the motor is spinning and getting up to speed. It throws extreme amounts when I'm pulling a trailer and getting on the freeway at anything above 3,000 ft altitude or so. It gets worse as I go higher and slightly better as I go lower. I have to shift the E4OD...

Dana 60 seals and u-joint replacement

There are axle seals at the pumpkin that can be changed. You have to pull the gear carrier ( I think that is what it's called) to access them. The hardest part is putting the carrier back in. I had to build a case spreader and it was still a very tight fit.

    6.9 vs 7.3 Injection Lines

Good point about the ID's of the lines. It looks to me that the flare tips are fused to the tubes? It that's the case, the ID's of the tubes could be different even if the flare tips have the same ID. #1 and #4 reach TDC at the same time, so you can use either line for timing. But I'm...

    6.9 vs 7.3 Injection Lines

Wow, I can't follow all of that math but I ran some tests today. The longer 6.9 line on my #4 cylinder showed 1.5 to 2 degrees more advance than the 7.3 line. It's opposite of what I expected. I thought the shorter line would advance the timing more. Either way, I went from two 6.9 lines and...

    6.9 vs 7.3 Injection Lines

I.D. seems to be the same at .007", as best as I can tell with my dial calipers. Good idea. The only wire that I could fit in is very skinny so there's no way of keeping it perfectly centered in the tubes. Twisting two together was too fat. But it seem that the 7.3 lines are roughly .010"...

    6.9 vs 7.3 Injection Lines

I just measured the OD of both lines and they are both 0.25". I heard that the 6.9 lines are a few hundredths or a few thousandths of an inch shorter because the injectors don't sit as deep in the head. But it's just about impossible to measure the length to verify that. A while back, someone...

    1986 6.9 Pistons

I used UEM Dualaoy pistons. They are cast pistons designed for diesel motors. Working fine so far. I will say that the finish on my old Mahle pistons was much smoother though, and I would have bought new Mahles if they were available at the time.

    6.9 vs 7.3 Injection Lines

I just learned that 6.9 injection lines are very slightly shorter than 7.3 lines. Are they different enough to cause any trouble if they are mixed?

    FSS Amperage Draw

It appears that the fast idle solenoid and cold idle advance are powered by different wires. It's hard to see in the picture but the two red/green wires going to the FSS are going straight back into the main wiring harness, appearing to be wired parrallel. The white/red wire is powering the fast...

    FSS Amperage Draw

I want to put a remote on/off switch on the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid. I noticed that it is powered from the factory with two parallel 12 or 14 gauge wires. I had already run 14 gauge wire from a switch rated for 15 amps. But I stopped short of connecting it when I saw this, worried that I might...

7.3 IDI Rocker Arms removal and instillation

Resurrecting an old thread here, but has anybody noticed that 11:00 would actually be 30 degrees from vertical? Every 10 degrees is about 5/8" along the circumference of the dampener.

    Leaking Head Gasket

The heads were decked but not the block. The machine shop said it didnt need it. And it didnt leak when pressurized to 30 before it was installed.

    Leaking Head Gasket

Hmm, I haven't been above 9 psi, but I did accidentally take the EGTs too high for maybe 5 seconds when I had a bad up pipe leak and couldn't get the turbo to spool properly. That might have done it. I just ran my hand around the back of the head and didn't feel any oil. I don't think there is...

    Leaking Head Gasket

But have you ever forgot to let it dry before bolting up? I installed mine pretty wet, and definitely still gassing off. I'm thinking that maybe the gasses found an escape path and created a leak. Sound plausible?

    Leaking Head Gasket

Well that is interesting that there is no oil pressure there. The oil is dripping off the edge of the head gasket that protrudes outside the motor. So it is definitely leaking from somewhere above the oil cooler. Although the oil cooler is also leaking a bit. Maybe it is leaking from behind the...

    Leaking Head Gasket

I hate to admit it but the driver's side head gasket on my newly rebuilt motor is leaking both oil and coolant to the outside of the motor. It didn't take long for it to start leaking, actually. I haven't been driving it. I think the cause is that, in my eagerness to put the motor together, I...

    UEM dualoy pistons on 6.9?

I used them on my build. Same deal, machinist wanted .020 over pistons. I only have a couple of months of use on them, so no real review here. But I can say that they did not seem as nicely made as the ones that came out. The casting finish on them is very visible. I hear that the original...

Rocker Arm - Valve Cover Interference

The plan was to tow the trailer to the mountains, but it may rain all weekend up there. When/where is the GTG? They look okay from here. They seem much closer to stock than mine. Not any more. I already ground 1/4" off, LOL. The cam makes awesome low and mid range torque! Heck it also rides...
