Cold high idol and tach not functioning properly

What part of CA you from? I feel like I've seen your truck around town. I live near Santa Cruz.

Cold high idol and tach not functioning properly

Personally I wouldn't worry about the tach unless you have an automatic trans. My tach hasn't worked right for about 2 years, although just yesterday is seemed to be reading accurately again. The RPM difference you mention is the high idle solenoid for warming up the engine. The click you...

    Thoughts on potential truck purchase.

Sure "cream of the crop" is a subjective notion but finding a 1993.5 - 1994.5 IDI-T in decent shape is tough, and ~200k isn't bad for the age of the vehicle. Of course bone stock would be better. Hopefully a modded truck means someone loved it enough to do it right, but used is always a huge...

    Thoughts on potential truck purchase.

Yeah I saw that truck. Even though I want a shorter wheelbase if that one was remotely close I would have to go check it out. Unfortunately that sweet ol' Ford is about 400 miles away.

    Thoughts on potential truck purchase.

No shortage of Powerstrokes to choose from around here but not too many decent IDI. I'm gonna' have to pass on this one. I just can't get over the sunroof, so effin' stupid to put a sunroof in a truck.

    Thoughts on potential truck purchase.

Thanks Exhumis, yeah I should have gone over the receipts when I was there but I felt like I had plenty to consider even without seeing them. Matching new batteries and new cables all around including chassis grounds, speedo and tach were steady, tranny is so smooth I can't believe it's a...

    Thoughts on potential truck purchase.

Agreed. Many unknowns with the IP. The guy has a fat stack of receipts but I haven't looked them over. I'm tempted to wait and see if he drops the price--can't imagine someone paying the full amount. The reg cab is worth more to me because I need a shorter wheelbase than my current rig...

    Amsoil ???

Between what my truck drinks and leaks there is no value in paying for synthetic oil, but I do think Amsoil is quality stuff. I recently filled my trans with Amsoil and also switched my 2-stokes over to Amsoil Sabre.

Did I overheat it? What happened?

Didn't think about the fuel pickup being an issue here but now that makes a lot of sense.

    Thoughts on potential truck purchase.

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/cto/d/santa-cruz-1993-ford-f-turbo-diesel/7080446833.html I just test drove the truck in the ad and the body definitely looks rougher in person but mostly because some trim is missing and the paint is messed up in places where it looks like hood and door wind...

    Thermocouple accuracy question

Well, anything can break & I like the accuracy and despite what many people say I actually find the digital display easier to read at a glance than an analog model, especially given the mounting location I went with. Before installing the gauge I played around with it a bit to see how fast it...

    Thermocouple accuracy question

I have two thermometers on the porch--one mercury and one digital.

    Thermocouple accuracy question

Well after a few more uphill runs, unloaded, I only managed to hit 1000-1050 in 3rd, not enough RPMs in 4th so of course temps went higher. I guess it's OK, no more smells, at least no new ones. I'm a little surprised the Facet kept up after I bumped the fuel. I'm not running over highway 17...

    Thermocouple accuracy question

Well yesterday was the second uphill WOT test after increasing fuel and with EGTs only about 930ish I caught whiff of a new smell and immediately backed off--could have been the vehicle in front of me but it was a newer 'Yota so doubt it. The first WOT test was on the same hill and I smelled...

    Thermocouple accuracy question

Both couple and gauge were purchased as combo from thesensorconnection.com Auber Instruments digital gauge and I assume the correct probe.

    Thermocouple accuracy question

Well basically I'm starting to wonder if my pyro is reading accurately. The gauge reads about 10 degrees higher than ambient air temps first thing in the morning--no heated garage and probe mounted in exhaust manifold. Should inside temp of exhaust manifold be the same as ambient? Also I...

WTB: OBS Reg cab 4x4 5 speed SRW or C&C SWB Dually

I'm in CA located between San Francisco and Santa Cruz. Basically I need a short wheelbase vehicle and I would like to find one in good condition. Things can be painted but sheet metal should be straight. No beat-up 300k+ rigs.

    Gates water pump, poor quality

Would like to know how these pumps perform/endure. https://www.flowkoolerwaterpumps.com/collections/hi-flow-water-pumps/products/1664-1983-1994-ford-420-445-water-pump If I need to replace mine I will probably try a flowkooler.

    Pinion on its way out?

I had an 85 F150 that dropped a pinion bearing and you could feel a chunk and grind though the driveline. I recently replaced all my driveline u-joints with Spicer and greaseable was the only option. through Spicer(Although I do have non greaseable in the D60 up front). One thing to watch out...

    Clist AD Susanville--'89 F250

https://susanville.craigslist.org/cto/d/susanville-1989-ford-f250-diesel/7057260678.html Ad says mileage unknown and thought to be 287k but the truck looks awful clean and I would bet the mileage is more likely 187k. Of course there could be tons of hidden problems but a nice looking '89 none...

    PSD vs IDI fuel economy

In regards to fuel quality I recall reading, somewhere?, that the process of removing sulfur also removes the lubricity and lowers the cetane rating. I also recall that US diesel tends to have a lower cetane rating than diesel in some foreign markets. IF higher cetane ratings contribute to...

    Battery cables

I made my own cables but if I had to buy them I would probably try this company https://www.custombatterycables.com/ Not the cheapest but they do look well made.

    Radiator suggestions

FWIW I have about 4 years on a plastic tank/aluminum rad from NAPA with zero issues or overheating. Of course I do live in a mild climate so I have no idea how the plastic tanks fare in freezing temps.

Hard start in cold weather, gps good, full fuel filter

While I'm sure replacing the old battery will help enormously I would always keep an eye on how long the GP controller cycles the plugs. An old GP harness may have extra resistance due to damage/degradation and this will fool the controller into thinking the plugs are hotter than they really...

    Leaf spring question

The 1999 axles use a different bolt pattern for the wheels than the older axles. Keep it simple and find an axle closer to your model year. From what I've read on the Superduty swap it seems most people recommend V code leafs in front.
