Check out using a '94ish up dome and map light. It's the plastic unit and once I get to it, i'll put em in the 88 and '92.

No, '92+ have a whole different system than the '80-'91. Very common to just swap the multifunction switch. 70bucks at ford or you can try your luck with a junkyard piece.

The thing with the autos for me was they failed when I needed em. Manuals can too, like anything, but they are stupid simple so that would be a reason for "tougher"

Few guys over on FSB are runnin both filaments no problem on the 87-96, so I'm not worried.
The relay I like is Napa part number ECHAR272. They also have these cool pigtail/socket things to make hookup easy.

Nope, it's exactly what I'm doing now for my 88, and what I've done similarly in the past on the 84. The biggest problem you have is the stock wiring is just plain crap in the 80s.
