Just returned from a 300 mile round trip to Central Utah to do some wheeling. The IDIT returned 9.3 mpg's.
I had the family, full tool and spare load and ran the A/C the entire time except for 2 long pulls through Highway 6.
The coolant bumped M for about 45 seconds and then settled back...
Nice write up!
Rather than blocking off the mechanical lift pump, can you just loop a piece of fuel line from the inlet to the outlet and fill with diesel?
I like the built in redundancy should the electric pump fail.
Would an electric pump help with an IP that has hot start issues?
For the E4od trucks, 640 rpm is spec I believe. I have bumped mine up to help with AC at idle in the summer.
As for the knocking, the timing may be way advanced or just 300k worth of wear. The injectors are probably a little slobbery.
Yup, this is exactly what is going on. The starter crank speed is good. Black Dapwg, I have used that trick in the past without much luck. I will be pulling a trailer this weekend so I will verify the solenoid moving when hot.
My Ford will not start when hot.
It had this problem prior to the Moose pump and fresh injectors.
The lift pump has been correctly replaced. All return lines were replaced along with POP tested BB's. The pump has been timed by me with a ferret to 8*. I have adjusted the timing both ways...
Well...I made an appointment and had the emissions test performed on the Truck with the timing @ 5.5* and the air filter removed and OD disabled. The F350 cranked out a 13 out of 20! I was super pumped and then promptly installed the filter and advanced the timing back to 8*.
Thanks to all who...
I agree with all said above, however you might want to try advancing the IP to the passenger side a dimes width. This may improve your idle condition and buy you some time.
I just finished timing the Truck to 5.5* and power is slightly down but so is the smoke. I feel much better about going in for the test this month. I am tempted to not use any other tricks like pulling the air filter or locking out OD, but I'm not about to give the asshole ANY satisfaction of...
I adjusted it up, I usually run around 12psi daily driving. When towing it will hit 20 if I let it. I have never plugged the waste gate to see how high it will go, I am too worried about my headgaskets. :)
A smoke puff limiter would fix the problem but I think I can correct this for less than...
I just reread my original emissions thread and noted that BlackDawg said his Truck is nearly smokeless at 5* and a and smoker at 10*. Now that I have the meter I'm far more comfortable playing with timing. Retarding the Moose pump is much easier than all this other stuff IF it works.
FWIW, I timed the Truck this morning from 7* to 9.5* PBTDC and boost builds quicker, egt's are slightly lower and it smokes a hell of a lot more. Thick black plumes. Not really what I was hoping for emission wise but it feels good knowing it is timed correctly.
I'm posting via my phone, so sorry about composition.
My only hesitation and concern is what effect does a constant 12vdc input do to the ecu? It APPEARS that the ecu latches a momentary input and does not revert to normal operation until another 12vdc is sent it's way.
Well, I figured it was time to break out the meter and see what is what. There are 3 sockets that the OD light plugs into when inserted into the shifted stalk. The top socket and lower socket closest to the driver are 12+vdc. The other is a ground. It appears that the transmission ecu is looking...
Thanks Towcat, what can you tell me about this? Do you have a schematic or details on how it installs? Have you used this setup? It sounds from the description that once the switch is flipped OD is inaccessible until the switch is put into another position.
Here is my thread from last year with more information about the test and what I did to get by:

No, other than some quick googling looking for schematics, this was my first stop.
Why lock out OD? The emissions test used in UT is an opacity snap test. The big reason my Truck smokes so bad during this test is the lag during the OD to 3rd downshift. If I can lock out OD, the turbo stays...
I need to lock out OD on my E40D. I need to have the transmission default to OD OFF when it is started and not be able to be selected on for a period of time.
Any ideas?
I know a company produced a unit that defaulted to OD OFF but all it took to cancel that was a tap of a button. I am looking...
I recieved my Ferret 765 pulse timing adapter and timing light in the mail. I checked the timing for fun this morning and found it set at 7* PBTDC. I was pretty proud of myself because we timed it by ear...it took many, many tries over several months but we got it dang close. I am going to shoot...
