Dont get mad, spiked lug nuts

Hey all, I have been working on cleaning up my 94 super duty idi and the lug nuts look to be in sad shape. The rears are OK looking on one side, crusty on the other, missing one. The fronts look miserable, missing alot of the chrome caps, some of them have two regular nuts double stacked on...

    Oddball transmission ideas

I have a local person with a DT466 mated to some kind of 10 speed transmission. The DT466 is blown but I am curious what kind of 10spd would have come mated to it? ive found some info on Eaton 10 speed dual range transmissions and it looks like many of them have a .74 OD but it also has air...

Electrical problem on start (with engine temp?)

If you are getting intermittent 12v at the starter trigger wire, between the fender mounted solenoid and the starter, then I would then check the wire from your ignition switch to the fender solenoid. If that signal is constant when ignition is in "Start" but the output from the solenoid is not...

    aluminum vs. copper radiators

Makes sense, common brass has a tensile strength around 4x that of 110 copper (probably the most common grade) as well as much higher hardness. That makes it far less formable but there are brass alloys that are extremely malleable as well as copper alloys that are hard and rigid. They just tend...

I have no idea! I dont know that it would be able to interpret retarded timing differently than advanced timing, I just cant think of why your truck would seem to be adjusting in reverse unless its timing is slipped past 0. Does it seem to run OK?

Yeah I assumed it would pull RPM off the crank but I suppose it doesnt make a difference like you said. I will have to look at my timing videos again. I believe mine starts around 9 degrees at idle and drops to around 4.3 at 2k RPM. Are you saying yours is starting low and increasing as RPM...

Well ive only used it a couple times on my trucks but its pretty straight forward. I just dont have an idea which direction to rotate the pump to influence the timing. I'll reach out to ya once ive successfully used it to time my truck in. Whereabouts are you in CT?

    aluminum vs. copper radiators

It seems that the big weakness of copper radiators is actually the solder joints. If they could be fully welded like an aluminum radiator, you would have a much more superior product.

    aluminum vs. copper radiators

That is probably the case. I recently setup a new resistance welding shop and have become much more involved with the metallurgy of coppers and their alloys. Brass certainly has superior strength and hardness of many base coppers but there are coppers nowadays that have similar tensile strength...

    aluminum vs. copper radiators

I wonder what the purpose of the Brass and copper mix is. Why not make the entire assembly out of copper and GTAW all of the joints? Copper has considerably superior heat transfer compared to aluminum, the only issue with radiators is that they are soldered together whereas aluminum is welded.

    Oddball transmission ideas

Got it, very interesting info. My truck is running and driving just fine with an E4OD that was rebuilt in 2013. Sometimes it blips into limp mode but goes away if I shut the truck off. It also shifts a little funny sometimes. Might be alot of issues that I am still hunting down. Sourcing a...

Hah! I think the only way this truck will hit 90 is if I drive it off a cliff! The old dog cruises at 65-70 comfortably enough as it is right now. Might be able to hit 80 but id rather not find out.

    Oddball transmission ideas

Yeah thats the route im looking at. I have seen plenty of older medium duty trucks being retired and stripped for parts around me. Even looked at an older F-700 for 1000$. Thats just too big for what im doing. I will still need to fit it onto some trail heads and still want it modern enough that...

    Oddball transmission ideas

Yeah the truck is primarily used for log and material hauling, not alot of long distance driving certainly but I will take it out on highways on occasion. I looked up Spicer 6+1 transmissions a bit...wow those are tanks. It seems that they do make them with an overdrive in 7th, .74 ratio only...

    Oddball transmission ideas

Something I am trying to keep an eye for my application is the gear ratios. My truck has a 5.13 rear and can barely keep up with highway traffic in the slow lane. Alot of the transmissions I am seeing for these medium duty trucks are direct drive in the final gear so I will have to keep an eye...

    Oddball transmission ideas

Helluva community we have here. F-Super Duty trucks take a 4WD transmission though to fit the parking brake on the back in place of the transfer case. That leads me to wonder how medium duty trucks overcome that issue? They dont have air brakes like the big rigs do they?

    Oddball transmission ideas

Nice, that is a much better chart than the one I was looking at. As of now I am looking to put together a list of donor vehicles and their associated transmissions. To start off, I am researching which medium duty vehicles came equipped with the 6.9, 7.3idi, and the 444E. Right now I just...

    Oddball transmission ideas

Based on the site posted earlier, it looks like the big complication is the adapter plate. Might be somewhat different setup than how our trucks are setup. Looks like there is an additional separate housing that contains the flywheel and bolts directly to the block and has the starter bolted...

    Oddball transmission ideas

What are the sizes on the Ford transmissions (ZF5/E4OD)? 12.25? or something about there? What exactly is an "MDT"? Medium Duty Truck? so I guess the issue that would be encountered would be that I would need a flywheel that bolts to the 7.3 crank and a clutch setup that fits the transmission...

Well Pennsylvania still seems to have some decent U-Pull it yards still. CT and MA I think did away with them completely. The last one I knew about was chuck and Eddie's in Southington which I believe no longer lets you go out into the yard.

    Oddball transmission ideas

Yeah im just looking for other possible options other than the ZF5. They seem to be skyrocketing in price around my area and I am interested in seeing what other options are out there. I see old medium duty service vehicles getting junked and abandoned all the time. I certainly could ZF5 swap...

I got this F-Superduty with an E4OD and ive been mulling over getting rid of the transmission for...reasons. What kind of transmission swaps can be done within some level of reason? Some fabrication not an issue, welding on bellhousings easily done. Ive heard it is possible to swap in an...
