Nice! That's actually not too bad since it's going to be a straight shot from there to the hood access. That's the way I'd do it, measure how far the pickup stick sticks past the tube and then duplicate that with OP's setup. BAM
Could you measure how far the truck one sticks past the end of tube and measure the tube length on the van and then do the math after that? I'm sure the tube on a van is about impossible to measure though...
Winner winner, chicken dinner!
I FOUND IT!! Actually it was behind the FWD output yoke, but same thing, it holds an output shaft bearing in place. I didn't see your post before I tore into it, but thank you for the tip. I did pull the tail housing first thinking it was there, but then moved...
I agree that fresh stuff is harder than old stuff but it's still red.
Oh hey I just thought of something, you can always dab a paper towel on the stick and check level that way, even if you can't see it!
Just to be certain:
You're checking the fluid with engine idling, yeah?
+1 to check both sides of dip stick.
And why is your fluid clear? Was the ATF not dyed?
Our work trucks are Allison 3000's and run long OCI's with a lot of hours, so eventually the ATF turns clear but that's months and...
Oh man. I had put the trans together before the t-case, but after finishing t-case I had a part left over...
Besides feeling terribly stupid, I also don't know for sure what it came out of. At this point I'm leaning heavily towards the T-case, which will be much preferred to breaking down the...
So after spending way too much time goofing around with the tail housing, i came up with this contraption to secure the whole thing to the mount even though I have a broken eye.
I ground it smooth to try and fix it using Aluma-weld brazing rods, but they suck so bad.
Onto the real fix:
It's...
I like to think of air intrusion in two categories:
1. Fuel drainback. This happens becsuse of a back check valve in the stock fuel header or a tiny pinhole leak that lets the fuel in the filter drain back to the tank. Causes hard/no start in the mornings like you mentioned. Especially the...
Now I finally have them all buttoned up and ready to install:
Also PSA for ZF5 owners:
Get good SKF pilot and throw out bearings when you get a LuK kit. I used the stock stuff and my pilot bearing was literally dust. The TOB squeaked but turned still; however you can see the damage it's done...
Not today, but over the past two weeks I've pulled the trans and t-case for a rebuild. I've never done either before, so it's been quite the learning experience! Fun, but long, too.
I've owned this pickup for 18 years and 1st, 3rd and reverse syncros were all pretty washed when I got it. Thank...
That may work for you boys... but I prefer to use Kroger peanut butter. Don't pay the extra $2 for Jiff! Ain't worth it. Make sure to use the smooth variety! The crunchy bits are hell on those wheel bearings. ;Poke
I converted about 10 years ago, and used what was in the kit. Keep in mind I only put 60k, maybe 80k at most on it in those 10 years.
I remember buying these SKF bearings a few years ago and wasn't happy with the price, but I'm happy they were on the shelf! And I bet today's prices would be...
PSA: Don't use the stock LuK pilot or throw-out bearings!
My pilot bearing was literally dust when I got to it. As for the TOB, you can see the craftsmanship and quality differences in the SKF(left) and whatever LuK uses on the right. You can also see the damage to my shift fork from the...
I finally got these bad boys into order.
I took the leap of faith and installed the spacer, baffle, and race all together and checked pre-load. It was actually a bit *tight*, which I wasn't expecting. Then I remembered I'd slathered up the bearings with the assemblee goo and it is so tacky...
Thanks for the reminder! I just cleaned out and packed the pilot with my favorite high temp moly.
No Frankenunits here! BW and ZF don't have ANY interchangeable parts that I could see, except the PTO covers. Which was handy since my trans came with 2 gaskets I didn't use, and my t-case didn't...
You have a temp sender on your manual trans? How heavy are you with those kind of temps?!? Cause that's nuts. 280 is so high it's hard to believe.
Over the years I've towed in 5th as often as I can. If it were eating up bearings or such I'd have seen the damage. Thankfully it was pretty darn...
Turns out the rebuilder of this t-case wasn't a goober...just used a shoulder-less seal on that shaft. So I could dig it out and get on with the rebuild.
I stayed up late but got to the point that I'm ready to seal it up when I have the time to wait for the RTV to set for an hour then torque...
The goober that went through this before I bought it put this input seal in backwards on the t-case. That's why I had a 1/2 pint of ATF pour out when I separated the units!
The problem is that there is a shoulder on this seal, now on the inside of the housing. I can't pull it out, there's a...
Dang enablers LOL
I'm starting on the t-case now!
You can see the trans gear set all ready to go but I ran out of oven cleaner for the cases so I got to cleaning all the cases today besides a few bits and bobs.
@Hagan
I didn't order needle bearings at all, I assumed that a rebuild kit would come with all the crap that needs to be rebuilt...apparently not. BUT, like I mentioned earlier if I didn't have to destroy these bearings to get to the synchro rings I would have re-used them, and the needle...
Got a parts list, write up? That's the first I've heard of it being accessible to us common folk.
I really like the hard cut off of projectors and anything is better than stock, plus it's possible to get warm-ish bi-zenon bulbs still, whereas the LEDs aren't made that way in my findings.
Welp, I pulled the flywheel, and honestly it's hard to say where the oil is coming from. It's coming down from the top for sure.
After pulling the flywheel bolts, it seems that there is no sealant on them. Does this look like what would happen from no sealant on said bolts?
I did not use any...
Would you boys recommend pulling the flywheel to check the rear main seal? I put a new one in with my LuK swap 9 years ago and I don't think it's leaking.
Also, the pilot bearing rollers from the LuK kit were literally turned into dust... don't use the stock bearings! SO DUMB that they don't...
