    There was a concern that the outer lip should not protrude past the rear face of the crank and/or that it should face the engine. So I removed the rear plate that I had just installed a few days ago, which destroyed the gasket (expected). I inspected the seal and came to the same conclusion...

    Ended up pulling the rear plate back off and took a look at the seal. Towards engine: Towards flywheel: I don't really see a way to fold that outer lip towards the engine. Here's the crank relative to the block. Looks spot on to me: I'll need to order a new rear gasket and seal now...

    That Fel-Pro seal has 2 lips, one that folds in towards the crank, and a 2nd one that folds out towards the flywheel. I did temporarily remove the pre-installed plastic installation tool when I was first checking it out. Perhaps both lips were folded in towards the crank from the factory and...

    Thanks @Nero I'll tap the seal in a bit further once I get the engine off the stand and have access. Guess the Fel-Pro dry install seal is different than most as it has dual lips on it, which requires it to be seated deeper than a "regular" seal. Don't recall seeing anything in the install...

    @IDIBRONCO Seal pulled out with little effort with a pair of pliers, so appreciate the advice! Still feels odd to install it dry... I did notice the rear lip comes out past the end of the crank: So I guess I need to be careful when installing the flywheel that it doesn't pinch that lip...

    Ah good point. And yeah, since they were bored, they should have no taper to them at all. I'll just leave the rings on. I did notice they forgot to install a freeze plug where the block heater was. Will call them tomorrow to see if I can borrow the install tool and get one more freeze plug...

    Last time I spoke to the shop, they were still waiting on the pistons to come in. Going to check with them again early next week to see what the status is. He did show me the hot tanked blocked when I picked up the heads to return as cores. Looked really nice. Should have taken a picture or two.

    Good catch. Yep, its there. Got the new heads in today. They look nice I think: Precups have minor cracking, but nowhere near extending out to the fire ring: Did I mention they also come with a 1 year warranty? All in all I think a very fair deal and they got from Texas to Virginia...

    I'm swinging by the local machine shop tomorrow to pick up one set of the cracked heads. I'll see if he can point out where they are cracked and I'll take some pictures. He also wants me to bring him the main caps and bolts so he can torque those to spec before boring the block. The rebuild...

    Called up CHI and they do have a set of rebuild heads in stock. They will accept a pair of the cracked ones as cores. $1,150 total, including shipping the cores back.
