Modify 7.3 idi vs cummins swap

4400 rpms they will start floating, it takes a lot of manifold pressure for the them to start floating at a lower rpm, the stock engine in the shop truck with the compounds would start floating at 2800 with 50-60 psi boost working against the stock springs

Modify 7.3 idi vs cummins swap

Its a factor of the engine design, the cummins has very poor head flow compared to the idi, its meant for high velocity and quick cylinder filling, not overall flow or rpm. Also six in a row tends to be very torquey, and you know DI vs IDI too.

Heres an IDI i ran on the dyno earlier this year, stock pump stock fuel system with just turbo and intercooler upgrades, very broad torque curve with pretty much within 50 tq of peak for 2000 rpms, peal was about 1500 rpms. Another one, this is an auto truck with a very laggy 088 kit, had to...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Glad you got it sorted miles, haven’t had any issues with these kits before but I’ll be labeling each fitting to make it clear for future customers, appreciate the honest review! If the first kit I sent through usps shows up this week you’re welcome to hold onto it or give it to another IDIer!

    Diego Revisited

I either do jeremy's trick with draining the filter, or a put a plastic bag over the whole filter and catch all the oil that way if its a low truck

Oil on dipstick doesn't look right

Id leave it empty and see if coolant runs into the oil pan before you run it so you dont waste oil.

Also could be a timing cover issue, pitting, cracks etc are common.

Where does it go? Strange Wire

WIF sensor on the bottom of factory fuel filter bowl, you have it deleted with the one piece filter so it is normally omitted.

    Apples vs oranges (turbo question)

The 093 will simply make boost in an rpm range the 088 will not, 2000 rpms and below the 088 really isn’t adding a whole lot of air and you gotta downshift to keep your boost up, the 093 makes boost much sooner, so your torque/hp crossover is sooner typically around 2500 rpms where an 088 is...

    Apples vs oranges (turbo question)

The 088 and 093 are identical on the compressor (intake) side with them both using the same size t04B compressor wheel out of the box. The difference is the hotside where the 088 uses a stage five t350 (or p trim in some cases) and the 093 uses the smaller stage three wheel, they will both move...

Upgrades for mid 80s first gen Banks turbo?

https://classicdieseldesigns.com/products/turbo-rebuilds-and-upgrades?variant=32753072504911 I would do the 61mm compressor wheel upgrade to go with your plans, about 6 psi sounds right from the stock turbo.

Modify 7.3 idi vs cummins swap

A few in that range, an auto truck made 410/800 at the wheels, with a stick you'll definitely be in the 800ft lbs range with a 130 pump and 3582.

    Pump question

Check for a clogged return or housing pressure regulator, sounds like excessive housing pressure... maybe vent wire issue?

Modify 7.3 idi vs cummins swap

You should give a pump with a proper fuel curve a shot before swapping your idi out, the last bull moose I ran made ~100cc around 1500 engine rpms but only 70cc at hp peak, so I could see why you would have power/heat issues with all the fuel being at a lower rpm.

Modify 7.3 idi vs cummins swap

400hp or below I typically recommend the 3582, and the T04Z does anything above that really well, either turbo will be more responsive than the p trim hypermax you already have. with a v banded turbine housing either of those turbos will bolt in, you’ll have to convert the downpipe to a v band...

Modify 7.3 idi vs cummins swap

Here’s the 3582, T04Z, 362 and 364 compressor maps, any of them can be made to fit the borg Warner’s are pretty challenging even s200 frames I have put on hypermax up pipes required some spacing out to fit under the firewall.

Modify 7.3 idi vs cummins swap

If you plan to keep the na rods, I would do a 110 or 130 pump and head studs, that will get you in the low to mid range 300s and in the upper 700 ft lbs for torque reliably. If your hypermax kit has no leaks on any of the hotside piping I would just replace the hypermax turbo with one of my drop...
