The sensor in the speedo cable under the booster generates a A/C signal. The frequency of this signal varies with the speed. Intermittent Transmission Grinding at all times
The zf transmission is aluminum, and is basically a very large speaker. The input to the speaker is the engine. Any noise from the engine will be sent through and amplified by the transmission. I think you will find they did not have one at all those years. The only one they had was one inserted in the speedo cable about half-way, it sort of lives under the brake booster. It was for the cruise control. Even the first fuel injected engines in those trucks did not use a speed sensor...- franklin2

Yes, but they are mounted in the rearend. Your earlier truck has a speed sensor back there? I didn't think they did unless you have swapped in a later rearend.- franklin2

Be sure you know what you are doing with the wiring. You should never use a maintained switch for a manual button. It's too easy for that switch to get knocked in the wrong position and burn up all your glowplugs. And those things as you found out are not cheap. The white wire on the...- franklin2

Since it's starting and running for a few seconds and then stalling, that means the IP still has fuel in it. Coolant temperature switch and coolant overheat switch fail at the same time?

Wiring winch to trailer - 3rd battery?
Roll-back guys do this. But they use wd-40. A couple of squirts where the tires go and it makes it pretty slippery.- franklin2

Can the mechanical fuel pump be left on temporarily after installing an electric lift pump?
I also ran a electric pump with the old mech pump still installed, no connection to it. It makes a little noise but no problems otherwise. I did finally take it off.- franklin2

What is a good GLOPLUG
The plastic pieces around the plug ins that go right on the glowplugs are important. They keep tension on the connection to the glowplug. Anyone use Marine Deep Cycle AGM Batteries?
.03 or 30ma draw is considered acceptable. Thereshold of being acceptable is around .07 or 70ma. All newer cars and trucks have some parasitic draw. Let any newer car or truck sit for 6 months and the battery will go flat. I would put a maintainer on it if it will sit for long periods.- franklin2

You are correct. No deep cycle battery will have a very high CCA rating compared to a starting battery. The Marine batteries are inbetween, having a little bit higher CCA than a deep cycle, but still not as good as a starting battery.- franklin2

Electric fuel pump recommendations
If it will not start at all cold, most likely you have a glowplug problem. If it starts for a second and then quits, its most likely a fuel drainback problem.- franklin2
