    Free turbo with help

    It's an idi. They need higher compression than most DI diesels. No need to adjust the compression when putting a turbo on. The engineers who designed these things back in the day knew what they were doing.

    decked block/heads affect pushrod length?

    The lifters should compensate if you decked the block & heads within factory specs. If you took more material off than what was recommended, you might have some issues, especially fitting that intake manifold on engine.

    The thermostat does not require a rubber seal around it. Never heard of that for these engines. I always put a little dab of rtv on edges to help it stay in place

    Can't hear anything out of the norm. These engines are notorious for making all kinds of noise, including ticking sounds. I wouldn't worry about any of it.

    Wow that's steep. For these engines, it ain't worth it to dump that much coin in them. I'm sure you'll be able to find a good used engine you can rebuild. .030 is pushing it for a 7.3.

    If I were in your shoes, I would really consider a ZF-5 swap. If your set on an auto transmission, go find a used C6 for around $200 and get it rebuilt & slap it in.     Anything other than a jasper transmission would probably be better. They don't have the best reputation. My suggestion is to find someone locally that knows the E40D transmission very well and have them rebuild it.

    Yes & no. I found multiple cracks in the seats that extended into the cast along with cracks in between exhaust & intake valves. All of the precups were also cracked & some extended past the fire ring. Wasn't too concerned about that, since it's somewhat normal.

    X2. Time to get a real mechanic that knows what he's doing other than draining your checking account. Something doesn't sound right with the story. Anyways, hope this gets resolved. Might be a good idea to get those heads rebuilt while they are off if you have the means to do so.

    Did you say this engine has 875,000 miles on it? If so, that's ALOT. Don't think I've heard of an idi going that long
