Cuba is in Missouri too ;)

So what did you do with your truck today?

Today I drained the oil and filled the pan with 2.5 gallons of old, smelly but clean diesel. In the garage I found four 1-gallon jugs of Valvoline 15W-40 diesel oil, so I decided not to reuse the oil (it's only got about 1000 miles on it). The plan was to let the diesel sit for 24 hrs then drain...

Help Narrowing Down 1988 F-250 7.3 IDI N/A Slipping Clutch Cause

Yes, it's Luk 07225. I got mine from RockAuto (they always have a 5% discount code available). Current price is $249.89, take off 5%, and then add shipping. Depending on your location it's likely the cheapest option.

    RABS delete?

I wouldn't use compression fittings. The pressure in the brake line can be 1500 psi or more in a hard stop... properly double-flared ends with matching fittings (designed for brake service) would be far more secure.

Knocking at higher end rpm ?

I'm about to try the 2 gal. of diesel in the (empty) crankcase to clean out decades of sludge. But I'm not planning to fire up the engine. I'd really be wary of running it with only diesel as a lubricant...

    Slow crank

Here ya go... http://www.interfacebus.com/AWG-table-of-different-wire-gauge-resistance.html The stock cable IS 2/0... 0.079 ohm per 1000 feet. Note that these figures do vary quite a bit with temperature - but on a hot day you don't need as many cranking amps either. Assuming the same 500 amps...

    Slow crank

Unless you have a really good ohmmeter (Kelvin connection, 4-terminal) the resistance of a few feet of 4/0 should not be measurable. (0.05 ohm per 1000 feet!) If you see any resistance on your Harbor Fright digital meter (on top of what it reads with the test probes shorted, that is) it's time...

    ""Need advice desperately!!!""

Because that's such a quick and easy thing to do while you're replacing glow plugs? cookoo (If there's one dropped in the cylinder that won't come out, then the head has to come off anyway, of course).

Borgesson Steering Shaft... Just Do IT!!!!

Does the 980 shaft also fit my '93 (with tilt)? Edit: Looking on Amazon, it says the 981 fits a '92-'96.

    Voltage regulator?

I don't recommend doing that. The resultant voltage spikes can blow out anything that is still connected. Don't know if the regulator or the alternator rectifiers can handle it either...

    Valve cover gasket brand recommendation

I like my Felpros. The important thing is to make sure your covers are as flat as possible. Turn the spreaders over if needed so the center hole is higher than the ends. And (as I discovered the hard way when I had a leak that would NOT stop) make sure the bolt holes are clear all the way to the...

    Tools and Spare Parts

Couple quarts of oil, a gallon of 50/50 G05 coolant, and a breaker bar with a socket so I can put the stupid serpentine belt back on if I go through a deep puddle cookoo

    Low oil pressure

Yes, it's right there at the turbo center section inlet (in other words, at the far end of the feed line). So if the turbo is taking more oil flow due to loose bearings, there will be more pressure drop in the line and the sender will read lower.

    Low oil pressure

That's a good point... I fed the turbo bearing from the port on the top rear of the engine (where the original fake sender was located). I fabricated the oil feed from #4 Teflon braided line... I know the turbo is pretty worn, so I may be losing some (indicated) pressure there. Someday I will...

    Low oil pressure

That's reassuring, thanks. Should I go to 20W-50 for the hottest months, or just stick to 15W-40? Run any kind of flushing agent in case there's sludge at the pickup?

    Low oil pressure

When I added the factory turbo setup to my 7.3, I also converted the on-off oil pressure sender to a Duralast PS-4 (on the turbo), and jumpered out the resistor on the cluster. So I actually have a dash gauge that moves. However, now that it's really hot, the oil pressure at idle (below 700...

    driver side door lock issue

I had a similar problem and it turned out the actuator had partially "jumped" out of its mounting clip (one or both plastic bushings had disintegrated). Eventually it fell off completely and I could hear/feel it trying to lock and unlock, but nothing in the lock mechanisms moved.

So what did you do with your truck today?

Truck suddenly stopped charging. Checked wiring to alternator, ok, so had to be either the alt or the regulator. Pulling the alt is one of the easier tasks on this engine - de-tension the belt, three bolts all up high and visible, and the output stud. I seem to recall replacing the regulator a...

    Ignition switch loose inside?

I have never had a problem starting the truck - it's only when turning the key to Off (while holding the external lever with my thumb) that I have a problem getting the key out and making sure the switch is off and not on accessory position. Going clockwise to On and Start works every time. So...

    Ignition switch loose inside?

Hi everyone... been away from home for a while. Came back to discover my ex's son, who is also my handyman, had borrowed my truck (which is fine with me) but has ham-handedly worsened an existing problem with the ignition switch rotating in its mount. I think. Read on... He says that the...

    50psi hose for return lines?

Wes, are you off a couple of decimal points there? It would take a diesel the size of a locomotive engine to use 70 cc per second, just idling! In a gallon there are 3785 cc... by your numbers that's a gallon in 54 seconds. My IDI likes its fuel, moving a 6500 lb truck around, but not that much...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Changed the oil and put on a new Motorcraft filter for a Powerstroke (FL-1995) instead of the relatively small stock one. Then took the dog for a short leak-check ride :)

Banks first gen or at turbo kit

Mine did ('93, ZF-5, factory turbo setup). But it wasn't bad. I grabbed the firewall seam in a couple places with vise grips and bent it back toward the rear, then used a foot-long piece of bar scrap as a driver and whacked it a few times with a four pound hammer. Nearly instant clearance :)

So what did you do with your truck today?

My neighbor gave me some junk aluminum doors & windows and other scrap (including some copper and brass) that he didn't feel like dealing with. I spent about an hour disassembling the aluminum frames, added my steel, copper & brass scrap to the pile in the back of my truck, and took it to the...

7.3 idi F350 overheats while pulling

Adding more fuel is not going to lower EGT's... that's adding heat! More coolant in the mix will not help and may make a marginal cooling system worse. Ethylene glycol transfers heat less effectively than water - the only reason it's added is to keep the freezing point lower and the...
