    OBS Overheat!!!!

I would have said thermostat first - If you aren't getting enough heat into the radiator, that heat won't flow by the fan, and the fan isn't going to get hot enough to engage...

    Brake woes

BTW, if you have oil contamination in your rear brake shoes, they are /less/ likely to grab, because the oil acts as, well, a lubricant. One idea is that perhaps the rear brakes aren't adjusted properly. Make sure to adjust the star wheel out as far as you can(pumping the brakes a couple times...

    91 F250 tach problem

It's the sensor right there on the IP gear cover, next to the oil fill port. Check for abrasion / missing insulation where the wires go into the sensor. You may just be able to reposition the lines and have it work again, or need to replace the sensor.

question regarding multi weight motor oil

Remember, when talking about cam wear and sliding friction, we are talking about flat tappet cams and lifters. We have roller lifters, so as long as there is an oil film there, you aren't getting any wear. And that's exactly what I see - Cams just plain do not wear in an IDI. The part i *have*...

    Clutch question

If it's a DMF... be careful about pushing the truck too hard or towing for too long. There's a friction disc inside the DMF, as a "torque limiter". Get the flywheel hot and it can slip with a lot less power. After running into that a couple hours from home and having to keep the throttle really...

According to a test by Project Farm, don't worry about the sitting time. After 2 years and a small number of miles, oil tests showed that it was still plenty good to run.

    300 HP 6.9

My own 2c - With a stock pump and turbo kit(any), you are looking around ~200 HP at the wheels max. That's probably 260-270 at the crank, which is about what Banks advertises. You'll probably need an upgraded IP if you want more than that; plain and simple. RD2-110 will net you 250 RWHP with a...

    oil type

Not sure, but you've got two options: Centrifugal filtering, and conventional filtering. Centrifugal filtering is a bit more expensive(google oil centrifuges)... but does an excellent job, without needing to replace the filtering element - you just clean it. Conventional filtering - find a very...

    oil type

Mobil Delvac 15W40 with Motorcraft FL1995 filters; and I try to change it about every 3K-3500 miles. It's a small expense, and I definitely notice it in the lifters at the end. A bypass filter would probably help with this, though, and that would be the only way I'd run synthetic oil.

    A/C System

Just pull the compressor, tip it on it's side and add oil there. Spin it a couple times to get the oil down into the pump, then tip it back straight again. Just make sure it's a light-weight oil.

i am in need of some much needed direction.

I'm curious: How are you planning on insuring this truck? Being as it's a CC / Incomplete Vehicle, with a decently high GVWR? I personally ran into this with my '87 flatbed truck; same basic deal here, but because the VIN showed as Incomplete, I couldn't insure it like my other trucks(and get a...

Wiring swap - what do I need to know

The 7.3 glow plug controller is basically "plug and play". You don't *need* the glow plug light; literally just hook up it's main power wire to Battery +, and the red ignition wire(small terminal on the solenoid) to key switched power. On a OBS IDI/IDIt(92/93), you can literally just leave the...

question regarding multi weight motor oil

Exactly. Now, a couple other interesting facts: To make a 15W40 oil, they use a 15 weight oil, and then add compounds to it which "thicken up" when hot... effectively. This means two things: 1. As the original oil is a 15 weight oil, the "film strength" is that of the thinner oil, which is lower...

    A/C System

Turns out that if you need a "mineral oil" lubricant that will work with the OBS compressors(which are very tight and have lots of aluminum and are very easy to score), ATF seems to do the trick. High temp, synthetic oil of a low viscosity for easy flowing through the system. The "AC Mineral...

    A/C System

Yeah... Unofficially, you can look into the "HC-12" blends that are out there; basically a propane mixture that's, well, flammable... but definitely does the job. EPA says you can't do this, though, so I obviously can't recommend it. Another name for it is R290. R600a is basically butane, and is...

New purchase, HOT MESS 89 F350 dually

Here's a cheaper option: https://www.ebay.com/itm/272727660208 $27 seal kit; it'll include many parts you won't mess with probably, but the ones you are talking about are the 3 brown spacer things in the lower right area of the picture. I've had luck myself with kits like this.

Talk me out of going deeper in this motor

I'm pretty sure that bearing issues will change in tone depending on load - from deceleration to acceleration you should get some difference... I wonder if it's an exhaust leak somewhere? is what that sounded like. Or, perhaps a collapsed/failing lifter? Honestly, you could try something like...

need a definite answer: will a 5.9L cummins starter work in a 7.3L IDI ?

Yes perhaps... But I think that was a different Cummins starter. I still have that one - brushes failed a year later(was not new when I used it), and it's in a drawer. I more recently tried one from a 24 valve '99 cummins, and it didn't work. I don't know why - everything lined up, and...

    Fuel leak drivers side

IIRC there was one spot where plastic(not rubber) line was just like heat-formed over steel line, right there. I guess the seal was just from shrink-fitting of the plastic? Either way, just cut the bad spot and replace with rubber hose. Problem solved.

1990 Idi sitting for a long time

I know it depends on the area you are in as far a contamination goes, but personally, I'd just make sure the engine is free(breaker bar on the crank), check the oil level and color(hopefully OK), probably drain like 1/2 cup of oil from the bottom(look for water), and see if she starts. Pulling...

    Fuel filter housing question

To make things more murky, this also only happens when the check valves in the lift pump stop working perfectly - otherwise, well, the fuel can't drain back as it has nowhere to go. So, if either of these two factors work right(or you have an added check valve in the supply line somewhere), you...

    Governor adjustment

It also changes the "feel" of the pump/governor - much more sensitive when you turn that screw in. I've done this before with a pump that liked to die when brought down to idle quickly(slow governor response). It worked, but wasn't a solution really. And, for anyone else who reads this topic...

    Fuel filter housing question

Pretty sure this is not the case. It's intended to let air out of the top of the filter head, for priming(and air bubbles mixed into the fuel) - that's why it's a small orifice - you don't want to lose all your fuel pressure. The check valve prevents air going back into the filter. If it were...
