    fuel return priming system...

I've done this on one truck; it worked I think... The mechanical pump will push fuel through the electric easily enough. No, NO, NO NO. First off, the fuel in the high pressure lines is 'static' - it doesn't move at all without fuel (in the IP) to push it forward. The IP gets it's 'working'...

    Nozzle availability

Good for you! I'm in the same boat. I'm not an expert, but I've done a few sets for my own use. The job is pretty simple: 1. Grab the body in a vise. 2. Use a socket and ratchet to loosen up the end cap. 3. Unscrew the end cap. 4. You'll end up with the nozzle + pintle right at the end, then a...

    Turbo

Yup, I looked into this as much as I could. As far as I can tell, as long as your overall GVWR(truck+trailer) is less than 26K, and you don't go over weight on your axles(front, rear and trailers, and truck payload), you are legal. So, in theory... 8800lb gvwr truck weighing 6600lbs empty, a...

    E pump b.s.

Yeah, if there is no air in the lines, the filter isn't clogged and there is no leaks... IP will pull fuel just fine. But, you'll run a hair retarded due to the lower inlet pressure on the IP. I recall doing that with a mechanical pump too... I had the lift pump off the motor but still hooked up...

    Turbo

Thought I'd show this little gem on Cavitation: Either way, proper coolant will really help. I'd personally go with an ELC coolant like Zerex G-05 or Zerex HD ELC; these seem to not eat the old seals. Yes and no - For one thing, running a bit leaner will lower EGTs while maintaining the same...

94 F350 White smoke low compression

I will say that a couple of short oil change intervals and perhaps some MMO will clean up that sort of sludge real quickly. It's not the end of the world.

    Just saved myself hours...

One thing I'd recommend - If possible, just have them re-grind the valves as minimally as possible, and take any material you surfaced off the head off off the seats as well. If you do have to buy new valves...you'll have to have them take some material off the seats. Valve 'recession' into the...

    Anyone got an 'Ag' governor?

I'm not sure. I'm trying to take a standard 6.9 or 7.3 IDI pump and make it more or less 'constant-rpm' for use in a Bobcat M970. This application should need about a ~85HP engine; but an IDI is thousands cheaper than the correct motor, gas OR diesel.

    Anyone got an 'Ag' governor?

Pretty much what it says in the title. Apparently DB2 pumps can come in agricultural/industrial as well as the common road-governor style; I'm planning on putting an IDI in a piece of equipment, and want to buy a constant-rpm governor assembly to try to mod into a stock DB2 IDI IP.

    Is there any benefit?

Honestly, I think it'll have a slight negative effect, especially if you have the "early" snorkle - I've actually noticed a difference with that installed(on a turbo truck, but the same idea applies). The 'late'(hood-top) snorkle... I didn't notice /any/ difference, installed or removed.

Fluid to use in Injection Tester

Yeah, I've just been really busy lately. Haven't done much of any work on my vehicles after the last batch with my '00 PSD... Both it and my red '93 are running DD's and keep on going, so... I haven't done much. Yup, this is definitely a plus. Also it doesn't evaporate.

Anybody have any junk PowerStroke valve cover gaskets?

I will say that of the 3 7.3 PSDs I've taken apart('00 at 230K, '02 at 385K and a '97 at 499K miles respectively), the harnesses looked just fine... Not brittle, totally reusable(and I did on two of those three). I keep hearing that they get fried etc... but I sure haven't seen it.

Fluid to use in Injection Tester

I'm not going to say that it was perfectly representative of diesel, but I like to use ATF in mine. Seems to give me more... consistant readings. And honestly, it doesn't matter if everything ends up 1% off - what matters is /relative/ pressures (and spray pattern to some minor extent...) and...

    WTB Ford AIS "Lid"

I'm looking for the "lid"/filter top piece for the Ford AIS intake(FA-1759). Please let me know if you have one.

    Pcm swap???

Evidently, the E99 4R100/E4OD used the E4OD style of TC lockup - namely a solenoid that you turn on when you want lockup, and the speed at which it locks up is controlled by the size of the passage that the ATF can flow through(it's not instantanious). The upside of this is that it's 'easy' -...

    ZF5 reverse - repair time!

I'll let you guys know if/when we do something with the trans - for now, we found an '87-91 460 zf5 in a JY last weekend for $100, pulled that, drilled it out and dropped it in earlier today(My friend and I can now pull and replace a ZF5 in an OBS in about 3 hours... getting faster at it!)...

    best rpm to shift zf5?

Around town, I'll upshift as soon as 1800; rarely under that unless I'm just on a flat road not accelerating anymore. When accelerating(stop to 45MPH road or 60MPH road), I pretty much start in 2nd, get it up to about 2500-3K and then shift. When it's still cold I take it easy, once she's...

    SMF kits

Get the Luk kit. They work great. Minimal rollover noise. I think I got mine from PartsGeek; they were cheaper than those prices by far. And, of the last 2 clutch replacements I've done... it's been the flywheel(and it's built in 'torque limiter') each time. Clutch was OK.

    ZF5 reverse - repair time!

So... good and bad news. First off, I ended up taking the shifter and machining a small chamfer on the copper ring where it would limit the travel of the shifter lever itself. This got me a few extra thou of shifter 'throw'... Didn't work. Then I pulled the top off(that piece just under the...

    ZF5 reverse - repair time!

I'm playing around with a '93 ZF S5-42 which... won't go into reverse. Just plain grinds. However... If I pull the shifter off the top, and manually stick it into gear using a couple of screwdrivers to lever the "socket" piece... it'll go and stay in reverse. It's like it won't go quite far...

    Superduty steering stiffer than OBS?

I still want to know how to get that sort of steering(which I'm still not sure what exactly changed... other than fewer turns lock to lock) in my trucks... ALL of them. I've asked before, and nobody seems to know what you have to do to 'tweak' a modern truck.
  22. Macrobb

    Superduty steering stiffer than OBS?

Perhaps... but that doesn't sound right. Unless the steering box is different? It feels like stiffness in the steering wheel itself. My tan '88 has a HB unit from a '04 E450, so the same basic HB unit... steering didn't change, unless you try to crank the wheel hard while braking hard, then...

    Superduty steering stiffer than OBS?

OK, so perhaps it's just my imagination, but in both my '00 and my parents '02 PSDs the steering is... stiff. Not like 'armstrong', or like the powersteering isn't working(believe me, I know all about that)... but like going down the highway at 60MPH, it takes some effort to finally control and...

    7.3 idi HARD cold start

You should get about battery voltage minus (at most) 2V. Hopefully 9-10V. The more glow plugs connected(and the colder they are), the lower the voltage - due to more load on the GP controller resistor and wires.

    Swapping diffs

Swapping the yoke just takes a socket and a breaker bar. Usually they end up loose more than anything, but it's not particularly hard. If you want to be fancy, get a 'crush sleeve delete' kit for the pinion and install it at the same time. The entire job is about ~30 bolts - pull the diff cover...
