Noticed I stopped making boost on my drive home and EGTs went up about 150º over normal.

What did this ring belong to? It was stuck in the inlet and the fins got chewed pretty good. Engine sounded "fine" for ~20 minutes I was driving it home - what to check downstream once I get the turbo off?

Thanks

Looks like the inner part of the boot for the air filter to turbo inlet.
As for damage assessment, obviously you need to replace the turbo. I'd pull the intake hat off and inspect for debris, and don't run it anymore until you've verified it's clear.
A compression/leak down test wouldn't be a bad idea....

Thanks for the response. Yeah figured the turbo was toast. Oh well. I guess the boon is that it isn't the rainy season up here yet, so at least it will be comfortable work.

At least just R&Ring a turbo and the hat isn't that bad.

Finally got around to pulling the turbo off... Couple chunks of metal shavings stuck on the screen under the intake hat, along with a bunch of fiber from the hose it chewed ate. I went probably 10 miles with it like this...not sure how far I'd have to dig to see if any smaller bits of the blades made it further.

Compression test will tell you a lot. If numbers are good, slap a new turbo on and I'll see you down the road.

Also... Where's the rain at? Haven't seen any yet!

I don't know but now it's creeping me out. I had to take breaks since the sun was baking me and the thick shipping blanket I was using as a cushion.

81F in mid October is maddening.

Looks like I'm good to go - at least for a while.

Just in time for the cold front and a dump load of rain. Glad you're engine's heart is still beating.
