I have an ‘89 7.3 IDI that burned up a new starter when the ignition start rod running from ignition down dash to start switch stuck on. You might check if your ignition start switch is staying on.

I have an '89 F250 that just started smoking a few days ago and running rough. I do understand that white smoke usually means air in the system so I checked under the hood and couldn't find anything right away. Then I switched to the front tank and it immediately stopped smoking and running...
After installing three plastic type return line caps and viton seals, all three eventually (within 3 weeks) started leaking again. Then I bit the bullet and paid Dregs Diesel for their custom caps. Haven't had a problem since. Great machining! Perfect fit with new viton seals. Worth every penny!
