The engine is back in the truck - everything is hooked up - no leaks. Cranks and cranks and cranks... no combustion, no smoke from the tail pipe. HPOP resevoir has oil in it (we added ~2 quarts before cranking) We added oil to the head galleys through the plug holes. about 18 quarts total in...- milner351

Well - I took the block, heads and crank to Superior diesel in Detroit - family owned since '78. They looked everything over and determined .030" over was the way to go- so that's how I went. Heads cleaned up nicely as did the block and crank - no cracks, everything passed pressure checks...- milner351

Thanks for the tip - for sure it has to come out - and I will either get a reman'd long block - or rebuild mine. I'm leaning more toward having superior diesel here in detroit rebuild it - they are a family business started in '78 with a good reputation and what sounds like a high quality...- milner351

Well the news isn't good. Sorry I don't have any pictures yet. Something (I'm guessing pieces of the compressor wheel thanks to a faulty airbox lid) got into the cylinder - there are half dozen marks in the top of the piston, and some on the combustion chamber of the head - but that's not...- milner351

That's a good point about the pushrod - come to think of it - a pushrod on #8 did seem closer to the oil spout on the injector than the others. The truck is at my friends shop now, I've purchased the gaskets, bolts, and an intake and exhaust valve. He will be tearing into it this afternoon...- milner351

obs 40/20/40 seat
I've put car seats in a truck, and newer truck seats in an older truck, neither worked very well - car seats just don't have the height for proper position in a truck. The newer truck seats have really thick back rests which make them real tough to deal with in an older truck - no way in a reg...- milner351

man - I'm staring down the barrels of possibly having to swap engines in my '01 - if I pull the head and find piston problems instead of valve problems like I'm hoping. I have the garage and most of the tools - just short on time, maybe I should pay you to do the swap!:D- milner351

Help needed, diesel down
is your exhaust back pressure valve still intact? Remove the actuator arm from the valve and wire it open and see if that fixes it - it sounds to me like it's getting closed or partially closed - that would feel just like you have a governor / engine brake. Are you able to check for any codes?- milner351

compression is low - it's not an injector or electrical issue :puke:Compression test shows 140 on #8, 340 on 2,4,6. Wet compression test shows the same 140. Compressed air down the glow plug hole didn't help me find where the leak is - I couldn't tell if air was going out intake, exhaust...- milner351

I ran the cylinder contribution test a few times before tearing into it - I got errors on 1,3,8 pretty consistantly - #8 every time. Now running contribution test I only get #8. There's a pretty good flow out of the CCV on the driver's valve cover - so that has me a bit worried that I...- milner351

I did the sway bar end links - fixed that clunk - I could move the bar up and down an inch by hand. Shop around for those end links - I got prices from $31 all the way up over $70 each. Break and Pedal Assembly Loosness
Maybe - but pull the pedal box out and replace all the bushings in there - according to the directions from the "old" site - I miss that place - I digress. I did that with mine (I think I still have the original clutch at 147k) and it made a world of difference even though there didn't FEEL...- milner351
