    06 6.0 cranky when cold

I have a code reader. But thicker oil might indeed be the problem. I changed the oil in the summertime.... as I put less than 200mi on it in the Winter. The block heater's working; ask my electric bill. It's not as ugly as the hot tub, but close as it's on all the time. I just looked at the...

I suspect stiction. The scan tool says only codes related to the delete. The oil is standard Rotella. Filters changed every other oil change.

    06 6.0 cranky when cold

E-350 6.0 2006, 180k, deleted at 170K. Previous owner was somewhat clueless. Plugged in overnight or not, when I start it during sub-freezing weather for the first time, it's cranky, misses, and blows white smoke when first coming alive on a cold (<32F) morning. Blows acres of white smoke and...

Hoping for an answer that makes sense: blowing white smoke

Post delete, it still throws a code. This means I need a one-time tune. Any tuners in the audience in S Indiana? Runs just great now. Any help appreciated, including how to fool the ECM into believing all is well.

Hoping for an answer that makes sense: blowing white smoke

Very long story short, it was the EGR cooler. The three tests described above point directly to the cooler, not a head gasket repair. I got lucky. An EGR delete might be in order. Oil and coolant are still uncontaminated. From what I surmise, it would appear that I need to do an oil change...

Hoping for an answer that makes sense: blowing white smoke

I still haven't found my code reader, but what you said makes sense. It wasn't driven far. Perhaps the headgaskets are intact. If not.... it gets ugly.

What's the diagnostic method to determine EGR cooler vs head gasket? Thx Lefty W9YW

Hoping for an answer that makes sense: blowing white smoke

I think it's coolant. This is the sad story: bought a 2006 6.0 with 172K miles. It's an E350- a van. Ran for ten miles, and then the engine light flashed. A moment or two after that, white plume but the engine still ran, didn't heat up, good oil pressure. This is a completely stock van. Have...

1990 F-350 has trouble pulling-- lots of black smoke and "bogging"

The head was done properly..... And the precombustion chamber cups milled correctly, too. I trust the shop that did at least that part of the work. Another diesel owner locally recommended me to another place. I'm taking it there on Monday. The service writer knew his stuff, and they have...

1990 F-350 has trouble pulling-- lots of black smoke and "bogging"

The other head was likely repaired, but it passes compression tests, too, so maybe not so bad a job. There is no water in the oil and vice versa. Compression test was reasonable in all cylinders, within 10lbs of each other AFTER repair. The vehicle also heats from R in NORMAL to L in NORMAL in...

1990 F-350 has trouble pulling-- lots of black smoke and "bogging"

Answers to your questions I removed the intake and IP. The IP was fully removed, then timed Y2Y. Then it was retimed by shifting it-- a diesel shop did the IP timing by rotation. Sometime in its history, it overheated. The head warped, but the warp wasn't machined out. The gasket became...

Yes, and doesn't explain the black smoke and bogging, unfortunately.

1990 F-350 has trouble pulling-- lots of black smoke and "bogging"

Quick history is: I re-did a head, but the IP needed timing, and it didn't go well. A few weeks in a shop, and they got it going. New O-ring/return hardware, new glow plugs. Starts fine, warms up well. In town, flat roads, seems about normal. Put a 4500lb trailer on it, and every hill is an...
