So I decided while I had the meter on the truck to demonstrate the effect of the cold advance on timing. The first part of the video is with the advance on then I unplug it and you can see the timing change.

Enjoy!

Well sure, that's to be expected. But a good Video showing how.
On a cold start when the Cold Advance solenoid is energized, it advances the timing a bit because the engine is running at a ~1000 RPM, after the CAS de-energizes and running at 650 RPM, the throttle shaft cam takes over Advancing timing when accelerating. There is a couple of adjustments on the Cold Advance, one is the set screw on the Advance lever, the other is the position of the Cam on the throttle shaft.

Correct, but the term is "light load" advance - that works at all temps.

Also of note is that I've found that you can usually /retard/ the engine by screwing in the set screw, but /advancing/ it by backing off the set screw doesn't usually do much beyond the factory setting - it tends to be near the "minimum" it has any affect at.
(You /can/ over-advance the IP by rotating it, then "retard" it using the set screw and that works nicely)
