ZF re n re....in weird way

At a guys "Personal" wrecking yard and looking at a super cab 4x...when ***...the ZF is still connected to the block..but the back portion is unbolted and the entire guts pulled. ***...apparently it was swapped into another truck, now how the heck would that work? Like seriously is it that simple to swap the trans guts out?

Someone tell me more about this bizzare technique

It would be pretty dang difficult to get the guts back in with the trans stil bolted to the engine. That stuff is pretty heavy. They probably just took the guts to fix another trans that they had apart.

It would be very difficult to get the bearing preload correct that way also.

I'm wondering if they worried about preload...it could have been swap guts n get going routine...emergency...all I know is was told was swapped and driven...I don't see how...myself...

must be a OB/GYN.
they normally work with openings 10cm or less.
the case on a ZF is critical for bearing preload or things will be very noisy.
my truck has a noisy but smooth shifting trans for about a hour of freeway driving and then things quiet down. still smooth shifting.
i'll leave it alone as long as it behaves.

Would some confuse that as gear rollover noise on a converted zf? I'm not familiar with it but heard some peoples' weren't too loud while others were. Could be that the preload is off on some?

rollover and a noisy trans are two different animals. usually a noisy trans is also a hard shifting trans too. mime a little on the loose side due to high miles but the syncros aren't shot, so each gear drops in nicely.

I can 2nd that, it shifts good.

I don't recall how the zf5 is assembled, but some transmissions are plate mounted. Those can be removed as you described and there is no preload on bearings to worry about. The guts come out as a single contained item.
