So what is the difference between a std F250 and a F250HD? I found out today my 1985 F250 6.9 4wd is a HD...8501-9000 GVW....what makes it an HD? Would it have a TTB D50 or a D44? Suspension or frame differences?Thanks

Just means it's the heavier GVW - AFAIK, all diesels were the HD. 8600 GVW regular cab and 8800 for the extended cab. (or is 8800 the SRW F350???)

Regular cab F250 has the D44HD, x-cab and F350 have the D50. Might have been a heavy duty front end (snow plow package?) option that gave you a D50 on a regular cab F250 but I'm not sure.

Not sure on frame differences and heavier springs.

Mine had a D50 from the factory. the other difference is the rear end. the LD had semi floating rears and the HDs had full floating. You can tell the difference by the full floating has the 8 bolts on the hub.

Dunno mine has 2 more leaf springs on the rear then my friends truck (97 F250 7.3)

Regular cab F250's had the D44HD, and the Super Cab F250's had the D50 front. The D50 was still an option and available on a regular cab though. Seen quite a few of those around here.

1986+ F350's had the Solid D60. 1980-85 F350's had the TTB Dana 50.

The Light Duty F250's, had semi floating Sterling 10.25 rear axles, and F150 drivelines, for example, the 5 speed models had the M5OD (F150 tranny basicly) (behind a 300 or 302 only) and you can get a 302 in a LD 250, but not in a HD 250.

Those LD F250's from Ford make me think of the old 70's Heavy Chevy half tons they had for a while. It's basicly a beefed up half ton.

Here you can see my friends recently bought '89 F250 LD 4x4 5spd 302, notice the semi floater rear end.

It might have "D50" cast into the carrier, it might not. the Hubs on the d50 are much bigger than the d44/hd44. I dont have the measurements

Measure the outside hub, where the lock out is.

FYI dana 50 and 60 share the same hubs but a f350 with a 60 will sit a tiny bit higher.

44 hubs are way smaller and the diff has a more pronounced shape like a normal 44.. a dana 50 diff looks big and round

They were very rare, but I've seen at least one light-duty F-250 that had a factory semi-floating axle (I think it was a Dana 60; it was an '83 or '84 so it was definitely a Dana axle) and a diesel. I wish I had taken pictures of it, but it at least used to belong to a guy on here who doesn't post very often. His handle is "brians". It was also one of the few trucks I've ever seen that had dealer-installed air conditioning; had the non-a/c heater box with the a/c setup separately and underneath it (IIRC), and a York compressor.

I'm not 100% certain on this, but I think sometime between '87 and '91, the Dana 50 TTB became standard on any diesel F-250...I've only seen Dana 44's on slant-nose trucks.

FWIW...
