hmm i was told the p pump gets vacuum to regulate fuel air mix and that was a possible reason y it is missing a cylinder

i just have a feeling it is retarded

is it common for these engines to slip out of time with out taking the ip off that is what it is acting like its hard to start you have to give it throttle it idles ok but give it throttle at all it cuts out and unless you let off the fuel easily it will die?

really cool pics by the way

ya they can slip time......the timing gear is a taper fit with no key so it can slip

I think you need to adjust the idle up just a touch , another thing thats a real common problem is the small rubber fuel line on the back side of the IP will go rotton so change that out for new rated line, also change out yer fuel filter just to eliminate all posibilities here ................check back with us then before we dive into the timing deal

what little rubber hose? all i see are metal ones i did change some other rubber hoses around the lift pump and it seemed to get better now i am getting some black smoke with the white but it still misses when you give it throttle

**o ok i see the only little one there is so would this cause it to miss?

did you clean the lil screen at the inlet to the pump?

adjust yer idle up a touch too

1994-1998 12V Idle Adjustment
Adjusting the idle speed on the diesel engine is not difficult. The adjustment is located on the driver side of the injector pump near the rear of the pump. You will need a 10 mm wrench.
Correct speed is:

* 1994-1998 with AT - in drive with AC on 750 -800 RPM
* 1994-1998 with manual in neutral with AC on 750-800 RPM
* NOTE: These speeds may cause stalling when the engine is cold. If this is a problem for you, bump the idle speed to 900 RPM.

Idle Speed Adjustment
There are several ways to reach the idle adjustment.

1. Go in from the front of the truck - Lay over on the radiator and snake the right arm back and down to the adjustment.
2. From a short stepladder beside the driver side tire - Reach down from behind the injector pump to the adjustment.
3. Stand on 5-gallon bucket by the drivers wheel, lean in under the hood and put the back of your head against the hood insulation - reach your right hand under the brake master AND under the ABS lines to the back of the pump. From any of the positions above, you can easily feel a vertical bolt with the extra threads on the bottom. The locknut is on the bolt threads below the boss on the pump housing.

An open end wrench will usually loosen the locknut, it is difficult to get a box end wrench to fit onto the locknut.

* Loosen the 10 mm Locknut on the low idle adjusting screw at the rear of the injector pump.
* Take the left hand and gently push the linkage rearward to take the pressure off and with the right hand
o turn the idle screw counter clockwise (up) to increase idle speed
o turn the idle screw clockwise (down) to decrease idle speed
* Look at the RPM and repeat to get what you want.
* Tighten the 10 mm locknut when the idle speed is correct.

the idle is ok its set @ 800 i was told that the fuel preheater is a place that air leaks happen quite often and was reccomended to just take it off completely i have not done this yet but it isnt going to be hooked up anyway so i was going to get rid of it and put a filter in its place maybe this is where i am getting my air leaks from?

I've not heard of common leaks at the pre-heater on p-pumped cummins before but have on the heater of the 89-93 Cummins. It is very common to have the fuel return line leak air into the system.

There is a boost line from the pump that should go to the wastgate on the turbo!
