I need to replace the starter on a 6.2 sitting in my driveway. I have a haynes book to use as a reference, but do I need to shim the starter when I put it back on. How can I tell if I have the right alignment shim wise that is just by looking at it? Thanks in advance for the answer to my questions. gsgIDI

No need to go through those gymnastics. Just remove and replace. Whatever came off bolt and shim wise, just do the reverse.
