Is an oil cooler necessary?

I am fixing a leak in the oil cooler hose in my Izuzu Pup diesel. The oil cooler and lines are completely clogged and the cooler does nothing. I am thinking about just bypassing it but wonder if it is shortening the life of the engine. The other alternative is to remove the cooler and have it dipped at a radiator shop to see if it will clean up.

I wouldn't risk it if the engine is in good nick, maybe an aftermarket cooler could be fitted, or a good secondhand oe. Don't forget that a lot of these diesels use the engine oil to cool the pistons!

I had to bypass it because it is a daily driver. Thankfully it is not a daily worker anymore and my commute is very easy. I have sourced a good used one and hope to get it on before making the truck work hard.
