the difference in the gas and the diesel 5 speeds is only in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
4th and 5th are the same gear ratios.
the 1st gear is higher then the diesel 1st gear and takes longer to wind out, also you will feel more power from midrange to top end of 2nd and 3rd gear.
pretty much 1st.2nd,and 3rd wind out longer due to being higher gear sets.
I thought the 460 zf had the low hole granny 1st gear ????

With the 4 speed behind my 6.9, its pretty rough to get her rolling on a decent hill. I realize the 9k trailer don't help, but still.

The old ford gasser ton trucks we used to have at work all had a mega low first with a longer throw in granny gear, were still 4 speeds and had a pretty stinking low reverse.

Any chance that a 6 speed from the 700 series trucks (1997ish) would set behind the 6.9's? Like maybe with a divorced case.

Here are the gear ratios for the 460 and diesel ZF5:

Diesel
1st - 4.14
2nd - 2.37
3rd - 1.42
4th - 1.00
5th - 0.77
Rev. - 3.79

460 Gas
1st - 5.72
2nd - 2.94
3rd - 1.61
4th - 1.00
5th - 0.76
Rev. - 5.24

All the gears are different except of course direct drive (4th). The gap between 3rd and 4th on the 460 ZF is a bit wider and a little noticeable when hualing, but you just need to hold thrid a few hundred more RPM before shifting to 4th, and it's no biggy. The lower 1st and Reverse are very nice when hauling that for sure.

My 92 has a re-drilled 460 ZF, piece of cake - and yes 1st gear is a real stump puller....You should hear mine at 3300rpm WOT in 1st with her 9ft plow pushing a nose full of snow rolling up on hood .....Music...:D:rotflmao

I just picked up another fresh rebuilt 460 ZF today. I'm just gonna swap bellhousings.

OP, your truck had a 5spd in the first place right?

Heres the new one. Removing a trans in someone elses driveway across town is not fun. Something tells me removing mine and putting this one in will be easier just being in my driveway. Other then that its a simple job. Had to cut the cross member off the old truck because the bolts were rusted tight and again I wasnt at my house so tools were limited.

i was gonna start a new thread, but this one is on topic already.

will a ZF5 from a PSD bolt up to a 6.9? i found one at the junk yard today, and they ball-parked me bout $200 and a 6 pack of bud.

Here are the gear ratios for the 460 and diesel ZF5:

Diesel
1st - 4.14
2nd - 2.37
3rd - 1.42
4th - 1.00
5th - 0.77
Rev. - 3.79

460 Gas
1st - 5.72
2nd - 2.94
3rd - 1.61
4th - 1.00
5th - 0.76
Rev. - 5.24

can you swap the gears outta the trannys and into the other one, to mix and match? say, use first, fifth, and reverse outta the 460 tranny in the diesel one? and what are the gear ratios in a T19?

CAN you swap bellhousins on a ZF?? i thought they were cast one piece? if you CAN do it, ill use the ZF6 outta the F550 they had at the same junk yard and swap the bellhousin off of the PSD ZF5. (if it fits...)

That looks like a diesel ZF, I thought the gasser ones had rounder bellhousings?

And you had to cut the 4x4 shifter....wow limited tools for sure! If you have a auto now, the shifter will be different at the base.

Yes

and what are the gear ratios in a T19?

Depends, there were 3 different gear sets.

No, the ZF5 has an integrated bell. Midnight probably means he is going to swap the front half of the case.

please explain. i want to know if its possible to repair a ZF6 with a broken bellhousin with a ZF5 "front half"? i wanted a 5 speed cause i figured itd be easier to find, but i found a 6 speed while i was lookin, and they got careless when they pulled the motor and broke a chunk outta the bellhousin.

Yep had 3 transmissions apart and put 3 back together, works excellent now. I had the one that was currrently in my truck and my fresh 460 one. I took the front half off my Trans and the front half off the 460 trans. Then bolted my front half onto the 460 rear half and Now I have a brand spankin' new transmission ;Sweet

I don't know about the ZF-6, I doubt it will work though.

Although, someone's allways gotta' be the Guinea Pig :sly

Diesel I'm assuming,
4.02
2.41
1.41
1.0
Or it could have the wide ratio if it's an early 84:
5.11
3.03
1.79
1.0
Or the wide ratio gas burner (4X4 460's and big Fords)
6.32
3.09
1.68
1.0
