Might be a silly question, but that "thing" with the four square holes, you bolted on the crank bearing holders, is that original? and what is it's purpose?

Thanks, Bart

that "thing" that is bolted to the "crank bearing holders" also known as main bearing caps, is called a stud girdle.
no sir, it is not original. it is an aftermarket upgrade.
its designed use is to tie all of the main caps together, strengthening the lower end.
think of it like this.
if you take your hand, and extend your fingers apart from eachother, the tips of your fingers are not very strong.
you can move them with your other hand.
no matter how hard you tyr to keep them in place.
but....
if you take brass knuckles and put them on the tips of your fingers, you wont beable to move your finger tips at all.
now..
the average engine does not need this.
honestly i most likely wont need this.
better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
stay safe over there.

Stupid question, but just to be safe...how smooth is the crank where the rear main seal rides? Maybe it's in better shape than the picture shows, but my first thought when I saw that is that it looks like a Speedi-Sleeve may be in order, just in case you weren't already planning to put one on...

the rear of the crank isnt bad,
just some visual lines in it, but nothing that catches a finger nail.
will get to that part after everythings assembled.

welp, i had some time to check connecting rod clearances.
all bearings when torqued down to 51 ft/lbs are 0.001- 0.0015!;Sweet

let the fun begin!
locate some alignment dowels, and get these heads on!!!
she should have some progress real soon!
