A friend of mine has a 04 dmax that needs to be taken in for some warranty work on the motor. It has developed some sort of ticking noise right around 1800 to 2400 rpms and will only do it under load (normal driving), it wont do it just revving it up. He had a hypertech downloader on it. He has since returned it back to stock. Question is, if they plug in can they tell if he was using a downloader, possibly voiding the warranty?

Any info on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There is a small possibility that they could see the changes if they really knew what they were doing and were really looking for it. In all reality, he won't have any problems at all. Nothing to worry about.

Does he have an LLY? ) 04.5+? If so there is a reflash that will likely take care of his ticking problem.

I don't know if any of this applies to the Duramax reprogramers but.....
Has anyone tried to "reload" a stock program that has the latest factory updates?

According to the Marco, the Dodge ECM expert on TDR, a Dodge 2nd gen 24v programmer actually comes with a stock program in addition to the performance programs, when you reprogram for performance they do not "download" the factory program they erase it, when you reload the stock program it is whatever the tuner came with and may not include the latest factory updates that were in your truck, only those that were available to the tuner manufacturer when it was made.
Marco has a 24vCummins ECM reflash he calls "Catcher" and a few guys tried to use the tuners to remove and reload the catcher program and the end result was by by catcher, it reloaded a stock program not the Catcher program that was supposedly "downloaded" into the reprogramer :(
