This is on my truck, the coolant system was maintained when i got it, coolant was good, no stop leak, i tested it at 52% glycol, radiator was clean brass/copper but the cap had a pressure leak around the cap seat so i replaced it with an aluminum one at 193k miles. The water pump on it when i got it looked somewhat new, maybe 20k?, it developed a leak so i replaced it at 194k and resealed the oil cooler at this time, and ended up replacing the water pump again 5k later. So this has had the coolant drained and refilled with new coolant and DI water 3 times since i've owned it. The truck now has 203k miles on it. I've put 10k on it since November. This is how much the filter has caught. I will be changing it ever 5k from now on with oil until i dont see this anymore. I think this filter is 27 micron too, in my line of work on large glycol systems (5,000gal+) we filter down to 1 micron so i may look for other filters to atleast get to 5 micron.

One thing i did notice was the restriction orifice in the filter i never noticed before, i had been sending about 75% of heater core coolant through this fitler with a valve i put in, i now cut it to 25% or so since it's not going to flow much anyway.

I've read that too, and that's why i wanted to post this. And this is only a 27 micron filter! I once ordered 20 micron fitlers at work for a customer and an engineer said to me "Just what exactly are you trying to filter out with that? Birds and fish?" 5 micron or finer for bypass filters is pretty much the standard for glycol loops to help prevent under deposit corrosion.

did you open up the holes any?
i have the same one and thought about drilling it for bettr flow to the filter.
looks like it works, i should just leave it.

The pressure will be the same on both sides of any coolant filter in a closed loop system.

It would never work then. There has to be a pressure differential for them to work. That's how I determine when to change them out.

A system can be under 13psi at the radiator yet have 20psi supplying the filter from the pump supply and 5psi leaving it essentially a negative pressure of that of the system as a whole. That's how a system is able to circulate. A larger hole would create a higher flow entering the filter and a larger pressure drop at the paper filter collapsing it rather than creating the pressure drop with a metal orifice before the paper element.

Mine looked about the same, maybe a bit worse, at 1 yr/10k-12k miles. If you find a finer filter with same threads as the NAPA filter let us know.
