the long episode of water in the oil has been completed!
went to the store for weather stripping glue.
just turned out of the driveway, and a tie rod drops!
turns out, I guess I didn't tighten it all the way.
stripped threads, and custom tie rod ends... all bad.

thankfully the 1 ton GM TRE's I use are available at ruff tuff specialties.
and they were 1.5 hours away.
just got back from getting them.

seems like carriack customs reverses the TRE for the OBS.
I bought 2 passenger sides and a drivers side.
but due to the reversal, i don't have extras. lol

don't know if i would use this set up again.
but knuckles are already reamed, so ill be stickin with it.

That's a bit scary...I guess I should ask. Since you've seen it firsthand, if you could do it over again and had a choice between the Carrick Customs stuff and the mblaney Delrin spacer, which direction would you go?

I've been planning to buy the Carrick Customs setup, but after that report, maybe I need to sign up for one of the spacers that got mailed to you...

lets just say, im pretty handy with a wrench.
and leaving a TRE loose is not on my resume.
but i believe that's exactly what happened.
i find it hard to believe that not only i missed it, but the alignment guys missed it as well.
everything was cotter pinned and greased.
but somehow, it let loose.

my biggest complaint is that the parts you need are not on the shelf at any local store.
but this is the path i chose when building a custom truck.

i also was not too keen on reaming the knuckles.
but just like my hotrods, things have been altered.
sometimes that's what you got to do for superior parts.

i cannot knock carriack customs for this fiasco.
i knew this was a altered piece. and i knew what i was getting into.

with the left and right TRE's being different thread, theres no way i made the mistake of installing
the left and right TRE in reverse. seems a little odd, but i don't see how it wouldn't work.

i need more time in the truck to answer that question Tim. it could have been just a fluke, but it coulda turned into a totaled truck.
my advice to anyone that buys this set up, is to stock up on replacement parts BEFORE you need them.

Maybe you did not leave something loose but the alignment shop did. I'm just not familiar with your suspension set up.

the nut came undone on the knuckle.
threads are mauled.
had to be a tighten issue.

just came back from another drive.
had some dumb female that didn't know how to drive, paying attention to her phone and not the road.
i didn't pay much mind, except to go around her about 10 mph faster than her.
i don't know what she was thinking.
she sped up and wanted to stay in my blind spot....

so hammer down was the only thing i came up with...
sucked for her having her window down LOL

well after that run, i came to a stop light with zero boost.
***...
some ******* didn't put the clip back on the wastegate actuator.

That's a bit scary in and of itself...I had been under the impression that the tie rod ends are OEM equipment for a 1 ton GM truck (although I don't know what model year range), so I was hoping you could go into an auto parts store and say that you need TRE's for a 19XX GM K3500 and they'd get you the right parts. If that's not the case, that's a big strike against them.

i need more time in the truck to answer that question Tim. it could have been just a fluke, but it coulda turned into a totaled truck.

That makes sense...fortunately, I'm not yet at that point, so I can wait to make a decision. Until that point, can I beg you to hold on to one of those spacers for me in case I decide to go that route? In any event, please keep me updated on how this works out. And, I agree COMPLETELY about stocking up on replacement parts before you need them ;Sweet

Thank you again!

What's the advantage? I have not seen any tie rod end issues around here, in the woods and such.

Duh, replaceable ends. I should go see them since they are 2 hours away.

That's one advantage (although it's a moot point if the replaceable ends aren't readily available off the shelf as Brian implied). The other advantage is a Delrin bushing integrated into the drag link (similar to the one described here: http://www.oilburners.net/forums/sh...ng-ISSUE-fix-Drag-link-roll-causing-dead-spot except that this one is used with a joint designed for it) that I'm hoping will significantly tighten up the steering.

Here's the ad for the setup: http://www.carrickcustoms.com/collections/frontpage/products/d60-heavy-duty-steering-kit
