1991 power steering pump

has anyone ever changed the power steering pump? have all lines off and 4 nuts off the pump,it moves about 1/4 inch in and out but thats it it comes to a stop. do you have to take the front cover off or what ?

If it's like my 90 that I just pulled, you have to pull the vacuum pump and the PS pump as a unit.
Then the gear has to be pulled off the shaft with a long 3/8 bolt and a socket for a spacer.

If you try to pry the 2 apart you will pull the snap ring off the shaft inside the PS pump and will have to completely disassemble the PS pump.

Once the gear is off the PS pump will seperate from the vacuum pump.

Yep it comes off as a complete unit. It also makes it easier to remove the oil pressure sending unit from the side of the block to give you a little wiggle room in there.
