    First diesel 1993 F250 7.3 IDI

Getting cold up there in Alaska, and some of that cold is coming our way (BC) pretty soon. How is your project coming?

Running Firefox. Was getting the warning for the last 3 days or so. Gone as of this morning :D

    I don't understand the physics

My observation is that the truck smokes badly (smells like diesel) and runs poorly on start, but runs ok (although still smells a bit like diesel) when warmed up. I have eliminated all visible fuel leaks in the return lines and caps. I put clear hose between the lift pump and the fuel...

    I don't understand the physics

Thanks for everyone's input on this. This all is starting to makes sense to me, and FordGuy100's description of compressible fluids is very useful. However: 1) is it true that a leak in the return line at an injector allows the hard (high pressure) line to the injector to drain down, which...

    I don't understand the physics

I apologize for being dense, but I still don't get it. The supply is drawn from the bottom of the tank ... no air there (I have plenty of fuel in the tank). My fuel system diagram shows the return lines going back to the tank, so presumably any air in those return lines just gets added to the...

    I don't understand the physics

Yes, it's true that it is only when it starts (lots of smoke, bunny hopping). But I still don't understand how air in the return lines makes this happen. What am I missing?

    I don't understand the physics

92 7.3 IDI non-turbo with fuel filter to #1 cylinder cap delete. I have read about, and experienced, very rough engine running when the return lines are leaking. I don't understand the physics of this. High pressure fuel is fed to the injectors to run the engine. Low pressure surplus...

do you take your IDI on long trips?

We take our 92 IDI on a 2000 km road trip every year.

    diagnosing the 6.9L want advice

My 92 has 6 digits ... but it's electronic, and apparently Ford didn't think these trucks would ever run past 400k km, so when we rolled 400,000 the odometer went back to 300,000!

One cylinder running cooler, injector problem?

Price was after taxes, before core rebate, and rounded up, so more like $100 CDN. JM7.3CW??? Sunshine Coast, BC I've read that I should get a "matched set" of injectors to make sure they pop at the same pressure. Wondering if that is my problem here. But whether I buy from a dealer...

    Smooths out, less smoke.

One cylinder running cooler, injector problem?

7.3 IDI, manual, extended cab, has 420,000 km. All eight injectors replaced 9 years ago at 235,000 km, "BB" type (at that time, I didn't know there were different types). On holidays this summer, long way from home, truck started running rough, "bunny hopping" in low gear, lots of smoke...

Engine loses power and dies after warm

I have a 94.5 PSD. On mine I can read the codes manually, see for example http://www.thorssell.net/hbook/eectest.html. Guessing you may be able to do something similar. Not that it helped much in my case...

Engine running very rough, not a bad cam position sensor

No, I had my swivel sockets ready, but I was able to get everything with a standard socket plus extension bars as necessary. Only the studs are 13 mm, the bolts are 10 mm. Hardest part was breaking them loose. Have bruises on my hands to show for that :(

Engine running very rough, not a bad cam position sensor

94.5 Powerstroke, manual transmission, extended cab, 2wd. Engine started running very rough - so rough that it was undrivable - but intermittent. Engine check light would come on when running rough. Ended up towing it home. EEC(?) codes that I read from counting the flashes in the KOEO...

Confused about 7.3 IDI Injector Part Numbers: CMR-x-RM

My 7.3 IDI truck is an April 92 build. The truck has a mix of CMR-4-RM injectors (stamped 'E') and CMR-5-RM injectors (stamped 'BB'). I'm getting conflicting information from the Ford dealer (who says his own parts info is not consistent): When he looked up my VIN, he spec'd CMR-5-RM...

94.5 PSD Unknown EEC Self Test Codes

For what it's worth, my truck was built in May 94, in the US, for the Canadian market and shipped to Alberta. Assume May 94 counts as 94.5 ... must have been one of the early Powerstrokes off the line.

    First diesel 1993 F250 7.3 IDI

Welcome! You'll find lots of good advice here. Glad to know that you are aware that these 7.3 IDI engines can have a cavitation problem, and need special coolant treatment.

94.5 PSD Unknown EEC Self Test Codes

We have a 1994 PSD F250 manual transmission stock truck. Last week it suddenly lost power while driving. Had it towed home. Learned how to do the manual self test by visiting various websites, e.g. http://www.thorssell.net/hbook/eectest.html. Diagnostic codes weren't helpful, but from...

6.9 Vulcan engine rebuild - any experience?

Seller says it's an '86. It's been in storage for a number of years - would that be an issue?

6.9 Vulcan engine rebuild - any experience?

I have the opportunity to purchase a "new" 6.9 idi Vulcan rebuild sleeved - assembled block without injectors, ip, glow plugs, starter (these I can take off my existing truck). Anyone have experience with these Vulcan rebuilds - good or bad?

    Buy a 86 6.9 manual 4x4 that's been sitting for 2+ years?

I have an option to buy a 1986 6.9 4-speed 4x4 with 250k km (160k miles). Seller says engine was rebuilt 3500 km ago at a local shop and had clutch replaced at the same time. He has recently flushed the diesel. Known issues - one of the fuel tanks leaks, one front brake caliper siezed...

    94 F250 7.3 Sitting for 15 years

Standing in front of the truck, do I turn the pump clockwise (to the right) or counter-clockwise (to the left) to advance the timing?

91 7.3 siezed after sitting for 2 hours?

Interesting photos, thanks for posting. In the top photo, it looks like two of the valve cover bolts on the left side valve cover (that has been removed) have been replaced by threaded shanks that you put a nut on, and at least one on the right side. Why would that be - did the PO strip the...

    CDR Mods

I can't see any evidence of a previous turbo installation, but I may not know what to look for. What I do know is that the previous owner rebuilt the engine (hence the grey paint) and it is possible that he removed an after-market turbo at that time. He did remove the factory air conditioning.
