What is this plastic piece and why is it wet?

The absolute best remedy is to remove the whole mess, heater and all, and replace it with a standard IN-and-OUT filter-head that takes a better performing three-dollar filter.

I doubt that wimpy little heater with it's puny little wires adds over two degrees to the fuel temperature anyway.

Do you have p/n's for the head and filters that have a better micron rating and proper flow rates? That are cheaper?

Just about any company that builds filters also sells generic standard-thread filter-heads, to which a whole host of filters are available for whatever filtering need one has.

You can get single-filter units, or doubles, and even triples.

Most big trucks use a double for the fuel, with a water-separating coarser PRIMARY and a much finer SECONDARY.

These are pretty much standard, thus not so expensive.

The best water-separating filters have a solid bottom with integral, made on the filter, drain-*****; none of that two-piece open-bottom leaking crap.

I'm running the wix one piece filter with the built in drain. They cost me $37.99 each to get them here. -cuss
Tractor Supply sells the filters for the fuel transfer tanks but i don't think they will flow enough to support higher rpm's. I think the ones they have in stock are rated at 10 micron.

I was thinking about the oil filter type. The canister type are bigger than and wouldn't mount n the stock location I'm thinking.
I wouldn't mind putting a head on to use the goldenrod filters but I am not sure if they will flow enough. Do you have an idea what the flow rate is?

If you are meaning the big clear-yellow see-thru GoldenRod sediment-bowl filter units, they are the greatest thing to happen to fuel since compression.

I cannot provide any scientific micron or flow ratings; but, I can tell you from years and miles of first-hand experience that no ordinary diesel engine is gonna feel restricted on fuel delivery when a GoldenRod is the first filter in line.

I have had one on my truck for many years and I can't begin to list all the advantages and assets.

Well I might have to see about plumbing one in, in the future. Since they are a water separator too, wouldn't just the goldenrod itself be enough?

The golden rod is for larger particles, you still need a finer filter for the rest of the small gunk.

From what I have read the goldenrod is ten micron and the stock 7.3 filters are 12 micron. Maybe I'm remembering it wrong though. :dunno
