So me and my dad are going out of state to pick up a first gen 7.3 Powerstroke with only 120k miles on it :O and I'm going to sell all my IDI parts or just slap it all together.

I want to swap the PSD in my truck, does anyone know what I need to do the swap? Is the 7.3 computer in the cab or on the engine like it is on the T444E version?

The PSD is the engine I've always wanted.. Because the IDI is just to quiet. But that's just me. It's also gonna cost $5000 to rebuild and IDI, and knowing that 7.3 Powerstrokes are known to go to 300k before a rebuild, that means I can just slap it in my IDI truck and run it! not to mention the motor only costed $650!

So what do you guys think?

why would you even be thinking asking a question like this in a IDI forum?cookoo Most places would consider this bear baiting. when you do get your PSD with wiring harness and ECM, do make sure you get the dash cluster too or the whole things won't work. only time you won't need a dash cluster is if you have a E-series ECM and wiring harness.
good luck on your endeavor and be sure to come back and post pics.

youre gonna need a bit of luck, and even more skill.
ive installed a 97 7.3L into a lifted 63 ranchero.
i still dont have all the pieces to get it to run.
i hope you didnt cut any of the wires.
not only do you need the computer(located in the cab), youre also going to need the IDM.
youre going to have to find a wrecked truck to complete this.
my first diesel was a 01 7.3 that needed major work.
after 7 grand and 6 months of OBD II scanning and fixin'
she runs great! PSD's are not cheap.
Ford sensors ONLY.
ICP sensor is 200 bucks.
if i were you, i would find a replacement IDI engine.
no offence, but if youre asking these types of questions in an IDI forum,
you are not ready to undertake this project.
research, research, read and more research.
not many people have done this, and even less have done it cheaply.
i only have the fabrication done for mine, i have not gotten to the electrical side.
i KNOW its going to be a nightmare.

FYI, in the event of a EMP, my PSD will be nothing more than a baracade.
the IDI will run forever.

Well, I WAS going to do a 12v swap but $ killed that idea (Would cost $5000 to do 12v also). I have a feeling swapping the PS will be cheaper as I'm NOT rebuilding it since It's such a low mile motor.

The ONLY reason I'm going to undertake this is because of the deal I got the PSD for. I mean $650 man that **** is cheap. Can the swap be done for $2000?

Do you know EVERYTHING I will need to complete the swap? I was told by the dude on the phone that the donor truck was parted out and crushed..

Where would I find the dash cluster and wiring harness? eBay? PSD forum?

Oh btw the engine comes with the IDM so that helps.

e-bay dont have jack for this swap, im sure you can find the cluster, but the wiring is the problem.
2k on a PSD swap? good luck!
what trans do you plan on running?
your best bet is to find a donor truck like i stated.
maby you will have better luck than i have had.
ive scavenged parts off of 3 trucks already from junkyards.
my next step is to get the complete interior wiring harness with the firewall connectors,
ive done gasser OBD II swaps before, and the complete harness was needed.
OHMS are a ****.
FYI, a 12V is a great engine...IN A DODGE.

So what do you guys think?

a 120k powerstroke for 650, did you hear it run? People sell them for more than that for cores around here.
And I agree this is the last place I would ask for this kind of swap info. Get yourself some wiring diagrams and go to town.

The easiest way is to get a complete donor truck and swap the engine over with cab etc...but then why would you NOT just drive the power stroke.

Seems to me you need to research this a whole lot more than you have and before you spend any more $$$$ on it.

I'd strongly suggest that you spend time on PS forums and read everything you can before beginning this journey.

A properly tuned and running IDI can cackle really nice BTW just so you know and be quite loud for what ever reason you want loud. Perhaps a 2 stroke jimmy engine would be more to your liking.

good luck either way...and have fun

Where are you in TN? I'm looking for a 7.3 IDI to rebuild and replace my 6.9 with. I'm just outside of Knoxville, if you're close enough I might be interested in buying your IDI engine.

Boy have you ever got a surprise coming when you say this " that means I can just slap it in my IDI truck and run it! not to mention the motor only costed $650!". When you say 1st Gen PSD, it must be a 94. Is that right? How in the hell do you know the engine has only a 120K on it when the truck was crushed it came out of? Because he told you.?

and why 5k to rebiuild the idi? Get a master rebuild kit for like 200 bucks, new bearings, rings, gaskets, IP, injectors call it a day! i wouldnt even bother with head resurfacing unless you had overheating issues.
I do understadn you want louder diesel. When my idi warms up fully it sounds too tame. Wish it sounded the way it does cold all the time! GREGREGREGREGREG (thats the cackling sound, not my name!)

hell, my 6.9 was dropping oil pressure like a bad dog.
knocking like a jehova witness.
1994 IDI 7.3T = $600
new waterpump, GPR, and odds and ends = $200
4" exhaust = $85
DONE
