Rockwell questions for RKOCH

I just scrapped out a truck that was comprised of a '72 Chevy cab and front half chassis grafted to the rear half chassis of a fire truck. It had Rockwell axles and 6x6 drivetrain (minus second rear axle). I know your truck has Rockwells and I was wondering if you did the conversion and if so if you (or anyone else for that matter) could shed some light on the subject. I kept the axles and drivetrain and thought it would be sweet to convert my truck to 4x4 this winter when work dies off. I can fab anything I need to. Thanks, John

FWIW, take a look at this site. A bit more than halfway down are links to a series of 6 pages where Swamp Donkey talks about the Rockwell conversion he did on his F-250.

I did it all myself. The axles were from a military 6x6. Yes you can fab everything as long as you are compitent weldor / fabricator. Steering, shocks, spring mounts, driveshafts etc was all pretty easy. I did mine in about a week. Ofcourse they have been out to install lockers etc.

Yea, I've seen the swamp donkey site, what he did was awesome, but I don't want to get quite that complicated. Wishfull thinking, probably. He also used different axles. I was wondering if RKOCH had any rockwell specific info. Also, was your truck 4x4 and dually before the conversion? Is the Atlas transfer case factory Ford or factory 6x6? Did you buy a disc brake conversion or fab your own? Thanks

Yes it was a 4x4 duelly. The atlas T case is aftermarket from advance adapters. I fabed my own disk brakes using 1 ton GM brakes. They do make kits but I hate bying anything I can make myself.

Hey thanks, I know what you mean about making your own stuff, my buddy has a complete machine shop and I have been going it alone ever since I can remember. I also forgot to ask you how many rpms are you showing at 65mph? thanks

Yes I have hooked to a sled. The heaviest being 70,000 pounds and it pulled the $hit out of it. I am supposed to get a new dig camera this week as soon as I do I will take some.
