Yea Im going to do a filter this weekend too.
and as far as the ball joints and stuff, cause im swayin all over the road? lol. I made a ghetto go-pro mount so i spent allot of time watching my side mirror to make sure my gopro was still on there.. haha

Start with filter first.
And no, I could hear them rattle in the video. Lol

So Im thinking my timing may be a little off after watching some vids and talking to people. So I went to advance the ip a little and i noticed these lines.. the line on the IP already pretty far on the passenger side. are thse not the timing marks? should i ignore them? I hear that turbo motors should b between 8.5 and 9.5 degrees BTDC? this seems to be ATDC no? here is the pic.

Those are the timing marks, yes. But they're only good for the OEM pump. Anything else will get you "close" but every pump is different. If you have enough time and energy to do it, you can play around with the timing and go about 1/16 of an inch increments until you're happy with it. But a meter is still the best way to get it timed perfectly.

The lines are a starting point when installing a different pump. Aligning the lines gives you a static timing that should allow the engine to be started. Correct timing requires the timing be measured with the engine at operating temperature, then adjusting with the engine shut down, then checked again until the correct timing is achieved. The way your lines are now is advanced from the starting point (pump rotated toward passenger side). According to Mel who rebuilds these pumps, slightly advanced from the lines aligned is a better starting point, as you usually will have to advance if you start with the lines matching. Someone set your pump where it is, but without the proper timing equipment it is a guess if it is correct. In the tech threads there is a description of timing with a Ferret adapter (clamps to #1 injector line) and an adjustable advance timing light. There is a sticky thread with the location of members with the equipment to do timing.

thanks for the info.. well took me a while but i marked were the IP was and it was a PAIN in the a$$ to rotate it to the passenger side..
I had to unbolt most of the hardlines to even get it to move in that direction. it would move the other way no problem.

when I loosend the bolts it was hard to even move the IP back to were it was before i touched it.

I advanced it about 1/16" and it runs and smoke worse than before. pretty much any take off starts with a big grey puff then gets black..when before it was about every 5th take off..lol. so i will try 1/8" the other way from were it is now and see what happens.

Just moved the IP about the opposite way, 1/16" past were it was before i ever touched it and it was much better, but its dark so i couldnt see the smoke. still heard the knocking/huge plume of smoke though in the low rpms :( Ill see how it runs tomorrow, and maybe ill retard the timing a little more.

And get that filter changed.
It could very well be your only problem.

Well depends, are you sure it's air coming out? Or is it being sucked in?

It's what we do. And by "we", I mean the community as a whole. You'll get to that stage, too, and start helping people out when you get more comfortable in your engine bay. Everyone starts at the "noob" stage, and it's up to you how quickly you progress out of it. ;Sweet

Oh, and I've never gotten air out of the schrader like that. I always get a small puff of fuel with the engine off.

All trucks are different but judging by your timing marks, your way too advanced.

That 8.5-9.5 timing mark thats mentioned, was very unsatisfactory for me. I had a member here set my timing with a meter and after a couple weeks, slowly retarded it a few degrees with much better results. I also turned my fuel down quite a bit and have really nice power and no smoke, unless I tromp on it, I get a little puff.

I think a lot of your problem is air intrusion somewhere. I know here in Vegas, return line kits can be had at local diesel shops. You should be able to find a shop down there that has a kit in stock. I went to IH for my olives but they didnt have both sizes. I ended up making some for my 86 and theyve been in there for 5 years with no problems yet.

thanks, I agree I think it was to advanced, yesterday I advanced it 1/16" from were is is in that pic. and and ran like ****. so when I got back I moved it 1/16" retarted from were it was in the pic and It ran much smoother, but it was dark so I couldnt see much. But I just started it and no white/grey smoke at all on start up :) just a small black puff. Letting it warm up right now, and then gonna go on a drive. ALso im going to clear line test some spots today
