Another good reason to stay out of Calif.

It's probably the same everywhere but look at old photos of landscapes of the late 1800's - 1920's... There are very few trees - most were harvested for fuel or agricultural operations. Converting to oil changed all that. Now there are plenty of trees - all converting carbon dioxide into oxygen...

Another good reason to stay out of Calif.

True capitalism encourages innovation, competition, lower prices, better products. Capitalism fails miserably pushing products that people don't want to buy.

Another good reason to stay out of Calif.

Back in the 1950's diesel trucks often belched black smoke to the point of sooting up the trailer the tractor was towing. Since then turbochargers, fuel management, tighter clearances, better transmissions have all but eliminated visible emissions. Same with cars... 2 speed autos, open crankcase...

So what did you do with your truck today?

I took the plow off the truck today and took the truck for a ride. Last year I had electrical issues, transmission issues, leaking return line issues, leaking water pump issues, instrument cluster issues on my well maintained 30 year old pickup I bought new for $25,000. Issue by issue, with help...

    Timing related to cold starts

The condition of the starter makes a huge difference too. I did all the injectors, pump, and all glow plugs were good but still had cold starting problems. The original starter turned the engine over but not fast enough. A new DB inexpensive starter made all the difference.

Finding the correct Starter relay for 86 IDI 6.9

Derek Bieri (Vicegrip Garage, YouTube) calls these solenoids the steal me option. They've been on Ford vehicles and tractors for years. Either one should work fine. The ign. terminal triggers the heavier terminals to close.

Glow plugs heat at hot start

Mine's always done that since new. If the motor is at normal operating or in the ballpark I start it without waiting. The glow plugs cycle a few times by design.

Shop near Yuma AZ? bad water pump

When the truck and I were younger I could back off the fan assembly with large channel locks. Over the years the truck grew more stubborn and I grew weaker. Last September I rented a kit from NAPA - no charge when returned.

    Max safe sustainable RPM

I always drive in OD like the manual recommends - unless the transmission is hunting - which I try to avoid by backing off the accelerator when the hill is steep.

E4OD High RPM Shift Between 1-2

I've used fuel injection line clamps on the cooler lines. The stainless steel worm drive clamps allow rubber to creep through the gear cutouts which eventually loosen their grip. I've never noticed much pressure in the cooler lines but I did have ongoing drips with the old style clamps.

    Max safe sustainable RPM

On vacations towing a 3 ton travel trailer I ran 80/85 mph all day long with an E4OD and 4.10 axle. It didn't appear to hurt it.

    E40d nightmare

There are several grounds that ought to be taken apart and cleaned regardless how good they look. I did all of mine but didn't stop to check the results after each ground refreshing so I don't know which one did the trick but the left battery, right side near heater, inside cab passenger foot...

Engine knock on semi cold start?

One of my first full time jobs was at an Esso gas station - 2 active bays. We had a customer with a dodge slant six come in with a minor operational complaint (can't remember what) and the station owner put a quart of Rislone engine flush, let it run in the yard then did and oil change. The...

Check engine light at start up only. Stays on for a few extra seconds sometimes.

The oil pressure switch can be swapped with an oil pressure sensor from an earlier Ford V8 - about $20. There's a resistor behind the instrument cluster that needs to be jumpered.

    Stanadyne Performance formula

A lot of additives are snake oil IMO - but this proves to me at least that water control and cleaning the fuel part of the system works. Plus it's not explosive or overly aggressive as a concentrated slug passed through without issue. The boom of delayed ignition must stress the chamber and heat...

    Stanadyne Performance formula

I installed a Monitor KHW demand water heater in 1993. It burns kerosene which is stored outside. The water heater was discontinued by Monitor a year or two after I bought it. Replacement parts other than the nozzle and electrodes are unobtainium. It's a complex thing and even though I'm...

Another E4OD flashing OD light thread

Any codes? Have you tested for AC ripple? Set engine speed at 1,500 RPM and set a multimeter to AC. Measure at the battery terminal. Anything more than .50 VAC will cause electrical issues. Good solid grounds and a throttle position sensor that sweeps without any hiccups.

So what did you do with your truck today?

Our first snow of the year and forecasters are calling for between 1" and 12" of snow in this part of Maine. Usually hooking up the plow is a PITA. It's called a minute mount (Fisher Plow) but almost always the plow tangs don't line up with the frame on the truck. It's critical that both the...

Dumb things you have done truck wise!

I hung up a tree near a road. The tree was leaning away from the road. Hooked a chain to the butt end and pulled. The butt dug in and stayed put. The tree straightened up and then fell towards the truck. There was nothing I could do. The left front fender and the hood was slightly damaged (it...
