6.5 deg BTDC vs. 8.5 deg BTDC

Guys, Thanks bigtime for the help. Its been really cold here and I was having serious concerns over whether or not the van was going to start when I had no place to plug it in (a.k.a. work). It was 3 deg this morning and the engine started right up (not plugged in). My factory manuals (from...

6.5 deg BTDC vs. 8.5 deg BTDC

Concerning timing a 7.3........Why are people setting their injection timing at 8.5 deg BTDC when the factory recommended setting is 6.5 deg BTDC? Just bought a Ferrett/Actron set-up and going out to check timing now. Truck starts OK down to about 20 deg F. Below that and starting gets rather...

valve cover gaskets and a difficult to remove CDR

What do you guys think seals better......the factory rubber valve cover gaskets or no valve cover gasket and a nice, properly applied bead of silicone (like on the oil pan)? I gotta' reseal the drivers side valve cover on a van and I only want to do it once. Also, the CDR does not want to...

    singing the E4OD blues

My E4OD is mechanically sound but the programming flat out sucks. Is the Baumannator TCS the best way to go to make this thing behave like a proper transmission? FYI....all the sensors are functioning and adjusted correctly. There are no codes. Thanks.

V belt & Serpentine Belt question

Did Navistar ever convert to a serpentine belt on the 7.3 (talking Navistar applications, not Ford)? Or did they just stick with V belts 'til the end? If they did convert, what year? Does it look like the Ford serpentine setup? Thanks.

    A/c to no A/C?

Just use Dorman p/n 34180. Rockauto has them but I don't know how to get a link to it. With this idler, everything stays the same.....brackets, belt, etc.

    E series overhead console

Did Ford ever put an overhead console in the 4th generation vans (1992 - 2013)? I'd like to find one for my truck.

    oil drain plug thread size

Time for an oil change, it needs a new drain plug gasket, and I want to pick up a gasket ahead of time. I think the oil drain plug thread is 1/2" - 20. Can anybody verify this? Rockauto says up to 1989 is 1/2" - 20............1990 and up 14mm - 1.25 Other sources say 1/2" - 20 from 1983...

Fuel filter change not going nearly as smooth as it should

When you open the water drain valve, the knurled knob that you turn threads up towards the bowl and the back side of the knob pushes against the Schrader valve opening it. The Schrader valve is a vent. The water won't drain out without the filter being vented.

    Block heater making noise?

Every one I've ever seen in operation made noise like that. It actually sounds like the coolant is boiling right at the heating element but I don't know if that is what's actually going on.

    Turbo question

What's the big deal with messing up the balance? It you reinstall the compressor wheel so that it goes back the same place it came off (in relation to the turbine wheel), it shouldn't hurt anything.....right?

    power steering blow out

If I remember correctly, the sector shaft seal shouldn't "see" any real pressure. The seals on the piston and the control valve are what sees the high pressure. Chances are a piston or control valve seal is on its last legs and is leaking (internally) thus blowing out the sector shaft seal. It's...

    E4OD and PTO

An F450 has 19.5 tires, right? I'd use 4.10 gears and 1st thru 5th when heavy....2nd thru 6th when not.

Why waste money on adding 2 stroke oil? The difference between Diesel and heating oil is negliable....in most causes they are the same thing.

    Tire pressure ?

My tag read 80 psi rear, 51 psi front. When not towing, I run 50 psi front, 60 psi rear.....50 psi in the front because there is a heavy Diesel engine to support, 60 psi in the rear because most of the time the back is empty and running 80 psi wears the center of the tires faster than the...
