Hey oil burners,
I have still got my idi and love it to death. But I am now working for cummins;Sweet:confused:! I am a certified diesel mechanic. Times are a changing for better or worse. If anyone has a question for.me. I live in central Virginia and my phone number is 804 767 0844
So its getting cooler out and I still dont have glow plugs and I am tired of using ether so I decided to plug her in tonight. Well the plug didnt spark like it normally does when it plugs in so I go and wiggle the cord by the block heater and GOOD NIGHT the cord sparks by the frame.
So upon...
So I've been thinking about this for a while. I would like to install a buzzer to alert me of low oil pressure. What do I need? And I want a cool sounding buzzer too.

How hard is it to align the front end on a D50 truck? I want to learn how to do it so I dont have to rely on the local discount tire. Took about 1 year to bald the outside of the right front. I am specifically looking how to adjust the camber.
any one know where to get one? I broke mine and then the african engineering fix broke the other day and I am running out of wire to splice to.
also does anyone know what that black round thing is surrounding the wires about an inch from the pigtail?
SO the "Brights" took a crap on me. I know they sell replacement ones but they seem to be questionable in their quality. anybody ever upgraded to something better?
I am offering my timing services for the members here. If anyone is close by, shoot me a PM.
I set my friend's truck today. His was at 4 degrees and I got it at 9.4 degrees on the first try!!
So after getting all the fuel leaks fixed i finally figured I was getting 10 mpg. So I checked the timing and I was a little advanced. And by little I mean 20*BTDC advanced.:eek::eek:
so I set it at 11* because that was the most i could turn the pump without undoing injector lines...
Hey yall sorry for the long absence. I've been busy but heres a summary of what Ive been up too. Ill give more details later.
This summer I rebuilt the engine. Long story short the pistons and valves made sweet love and I lost all compression.
I rebuilt the motor by myself except for...
So a while back I found that I had a bad number 5 exhaust valve. I did a compression test and 7 holes had between 450 and 500 psi on them and the number 5 had 190 on it. the engine has 295K on it and ran great excecpt for the obvious valve. So I worked with Russ to order my parts and ended up...
well I learned the hard way that there is 4 bolts not 3 on the front header-cuss-cuss-cuss so I need the front header. If got a spare laying around please let me know.
Hello oilburners I'm knee deep in a valve job and thought id make a thread about it. A while ago I posted a video about the truck http://www.oilburners.net/forums/showthread.php?55295-exhaust-video&highlight= .
So I did a compression check and heres the results:
1 - 450
2 - 490
3 - 500...
heres a crappy cell phone video of my truck. tell me what you think of the exhaust. Does it sound normal? Keep in mind its a 2.5 inch straight pipe. Also in the beginning I have a shot of the valves on the drivers side. You cant see nothin in the video but it appears that a bit of smoke is...
Would anybody be interested in these if I made them? I dont know how hard they are to find outside of a parts truck. I have a large supply of material for them.
So I just finished swapping in a rebuilt axle (DANA 50) that I bought from MUDKICKER. Well that was from an 85 truck, so naturally my calipers did not fit it. I bought reman-ed calipers and hardware from napa. I reused the brake pads because Napa had them listed for fitting all years.
I...

I am on a quest to replace all the metric fasteners on my truck with standard. So all those bolts I cut off the front end (leaf spring, shocks, pivot)... can I replace them with standard fasteners of an equivalent size and grade? or will that 20 thousands make a big difference...
so here's a thought...
Manual glow plugs are an on/off kind of system. You control how long they glow. Automatic plugs burn every time, no matter how hot the engine is.
So can I get the best of both worlds? A manual system but it turns off when it reaches temperature? I do mine for no...
So the drivers door handle has pulled out of the sheet metal of the door. Any way to fix this short of replacing the door?
I had a thought of welding a plate to the door to reinforce the sheet metal. Why did they make that door so thin?
So nearly 300,000 miles later, my front end is about wore out. And all those years with the PO pushing snow didnt help things either.
So it seems my options are this: rebuild the Dana 50 or swap in a dana 60.
now I dont think the 50 is a bad axle. after all its had a good run. but then...
So it seems like the copper tubing that I use to feed my gauges is chafing in a few spots. Well i have learned a valuable lesson in that I should use vacuum tubing as a chafe guard, but I am afraid its too late.
Is there any reason why I cant use steel brake line to replace the copper? I...
so my fuel heater is leaking. Now I love the smell of diesel in the morning, but Id rather smell it after it has been injected into the precup. ;Really
Anyway, my understanding is that you pop the black cap off, clean with carb cleaner, and fill with jb weld? Is this correct? Or do I...
Any idea on how to tighten up my steering? it seems as if I have to turn the wheel a 1/4 turn to get her to respond. Maybe in 2 or 3 weeks when it dries out here I can go check my tie rods and the like.
