How many teeth on a IP gear?

OK Thanks So the cam spins at half of the crank speed, so a gear with 53 teeth on the crankshaft would give an accurate tach reading.

Question on machining or decking an idi head?

I used to oring heads and blocks. I'm not saying it's impossible. But it would be a complete pain in the ass that and something that most machine shops wouldn't care to try. On the fancy BHJ setup I used (which makes lining up the grooves on the block and heads WAY easier), the cutter is a...

Question on machining or decking an idi head?

I've decked lots of blocks and heads - some of them alot; the only time I had issues with intakes fitting, it could be remedied with elongating the intake's bolt holes (good bye port match). This was only a couple of times. The more common issue was having to mill the faces of the intake because...

How many teeth on a IP gear?

Just like the title says. Anyone out there have a IDI in pieces that can tell me how many teeth are on the gear that bolts to the injection pump? I'm trying to retrofit a IDI tach and sensor onto a different engine.

Question on machining or decking an idi head?

The precups are really frickin hard, they can be surfaced, but not grooved for an o-ring.

Need lessons on how to talk 'machine shop'.

This is correct; I wold keep the lifters in the same order as they came out just for peace of mind. A chunk of 2x4 with 16 big holes drilled in it works well for this....then make another one with smaller holes for the pushrods/rockers.

Guys out there with 85 super cab ford 4x4 diesel

I'm guessing you have a Sterling rear end and 8800 GVW, which is a 3" wide pad from what I have seen. 2 1/2" is on the semi floater rear end (never cam behind a diesel), and dually use a 3 1/2"? Somebody else want to verify this?

Need lessons on how to talk 'machine shop'.

Every machine shop I have worked at priced every little process separately. Ex. if you call a machine shop and ask them how much to bore a block, and they tell you something like $8 per hole, that doesn't necessarily include the 2 trips through the hot tank, removal of cam bearings/freeze...

    Gas to Diesel Swap

Motor mounts, core support would need changed. Probably easier to put the ZF5 into your current truck. Is your truck currently auto or manual?

    zf5 swap

Power steering lines get rearranged. On a hydroboost setup, the pressure line from the pump goes up to the hydroboost unit, then back down to the steering box, still using a high pressure line. Then there are return lines from both the steering box and hydroboost unit back to the pump, requiring...

Lets talk hot rodding 101 everyone...theory and practical too

Not sure on that one; like I said, my experience is on engines that used copper gaskets and usually didn't even have coolant passages. Try doing a google search on the O-ring process; I came up with all kinds of stuff, from the full on professional installs like I've seen to people taking...

Lets talk hot rodding 101 everyone...theory and practical too

When I used to put O-rings in a engine, it takes a tool specifically for doing it, but you just machine a groove into the deck surface, then tap some stainless wire into the groove. The groove on the adjacent deck surface is just a receiver groove. All of them I ever did used copper head gaskets...

I think the freeze plugs could be a simple solution; has anyone ever heard of a stock one having any issues? I've heard of quite a few freeze plug problems, but only after someone had been messing with them. Just leave them as they are, and they seem to be fine. Just remember that if you take a...

    I need a tail gate

My truck came without one. I bought a tailgate off of craigslist; 2 miles away from my house, not in perfect shape, but pretty decent, even the right color to match my truck........for $25. Every tailgate I saw for sale before this was at least $100 if they were anywhere close to straight.

    Dual Tank blues....

I got some 3-way ball valves from McMaster-Carr and installed them on the floor of the cab just to the left of the drivers seat. I extended the fuel lines from where the FSV was to the new ball valves. You can wire a switch in place of the FSV and use the switch to select which fuel tank is...

    Dual Tank blues....

Thats what mine did when it gave up, except the gauge read off of the rear tank, pulled from the front tank, and returned into the rear tank, overflowing the tank and dumping diesel everywhere. i permanently fixed the problem by switching to manual valves.

Oil changed / now smokes more

On mine, it takes 12 quarts to get it to the top of the mark on the dipstick. It hardly uses any oil if I leave the level right at the bottom the "FILL" area on the dipstick. If it's any fuller than that, it burns it off really quick. And mine always smokes more after an oil change, but that's...

How do I charge a 24 volt battery

The buses I work on use 4 group 31 batteries (guess where mine came from). 2 wired in parallel (like our trucks) for 12v, and the other 2 wired in series for 24v. And a little diagram just to avoid confusion.....

Lets talk hot rodding 101 everyone...theory and practical too

I've spent lots of time working on/machining race engines and am well aware of all the little tricks used on them. But keep in mind that most of the modifications that happen inside a race motor are to allow the motor to spin freely (these could apply to an IDI), and survive at high RPM. The...

    First Ford Diesel

On further investigation, I realized that some of the IDI's (I think mostly the older ones) had a flexplate in them that's beefy enough to support a standard type, press on ring gear like a manual trans truck would use. That makes it cheap and easy to replace (just not easy to get to).

    First Ford Diesel

Ring gears on flywheels are easily changed. I always used a big brass drift to beat the ring gears off. For install, you just heat the ring gear up with a torch; they are thin enough they expand, and you just place it on the flywheel and let it cool/shrink back up. But on flex plates, they weld...
