changed the oil the other day... 1st oil change on the truck since i have owned it.. After the oil change now it smokes a lot more, not black smoke, just the whiteish gray smoke... Shouldn't be over full as i went with the SD filter, and 12 quarts of oil.. If anything i figured it would be low but it reads just above the full line on the stick.. Any ideas? It seems to run fine and oil pressure is good..

What brand oil did you use? I have problems with my 92 like that with Rotella. Been running the Castrol diesel oil with no problems now for over a year...

With Rotella I was getting smoke and using 2 qt in 1200 mi. Switched to Castrol.. no smoke and don't use a drop.... go figure.

SD Filter ?

If you used the standard filter, I think an oil & filter change
uses (10) quarts - if you use the Motorcraft 1995 extra capacity
filter, its' right around (11) quarts ....

Have you checked your dipstick first thing in the morning
after your truck set all night ?

You overfilled it

+1 on it being overfilled by a quart or two. Also, what brand of oil are you using? Make sure you are using diesel specific oil, but in either case DO NOT LEAVE IT OVERFULL. Best case scenario is that it will smoke and find it's way out of some seals, worst case scenario is that it will foam and run away , which is not something you want to deal with ....

Look at your dipstick when its cold, it will usually go down about a quart when your engine is hot, but I'm gonna bet you are way over the top of the full mark.

Good luck

i used the Shell Rotela oil, i believe the filter used was the FL1995.. i will double check how full it is today when i get home.. i actually need to replace the drain plug anyway it is leaking a little around it.. So if i change that i will lose a little oil anyway.. thanks..

When you change the oil don't depend on what the stick tels you. If you know you installed 11 quarts so what about the stick reading. You know there is 11 quarts in the pan no matter what the stick is telling you. As posted above.. Its 10 quarts with the small filter and 11 with the large 1995 filter. Always run the engine after an filter and oil change. Let it settle in the pan and then check the level. Mark the stick if its not reading the correct level when you know how much oil you installed.

On mine, it takes 12 quarts to get it to the top of the mark on the dipstick. It hardly uses any oil if I leave the level right at the bottom the "FILL" area on the dipstick. If it's any fuller than that, it burns it off really quick.
And mine always smokes more after an oil change, but that's probably because I filter the oil and throw it back in the fuel tank (4 free gallons of fuel!).
