    Truck won’t start with key

Try like I said and hot wire the Solenoid on the IP, then try cranking with the key. I think you have a dead spot in the ignition switch. Your problem sort of reminds me of an old gasser when the coil resistor would burn out. You could get spark when cranking, but the engine would die as soon...

    Truck won’t start with key

I would think the ignition switch is a definite possibility. Perhaps it’s cutting power to “run” when in “start”. Try running a jumper straight to the fuel shut off solenoid on the IP and then try starting with the key.

Looks pretty straight. What’s on the sides just in front of the tail lights?

    Pickle a 7.3 (out of vehicle) ?? ?

Because you’re spaying a liquid in there. You wouldn’t want to put the glow plugs back in, and then later on someone tries turning it over and hydro locks it. It may not be a real concern, but that was my rationale for saying it.

    Pickle a 7.3 (out of vehicle) ?? ?

Maybe pull the glow plugs, and shoot some fogging oil into each cylinder, then leave the glow plugs out. Hit the coolant inlet and outlet with the fogging oil too, as well as any bare metal. Then get a couple large desiccant bags and lay on the engine and wrap it up tight in heavy plastic...

How do y’all like to shift your ZF5’s?

I have 4.10’s, and I start out in 1st 90% of the time or more. I just don’t like slipping the clutch much. If I’m unloaded, I also don’t wind it out much. I’m into 2nd pretty quickly and if I’m taking off at a stoplight, I’m into 3rd about as I’m clearing the intersection. I usually only take...

Hydraulic lifter orientation and wear patterns?

Maybe this will help. I don’t have any advice right now on trouble shooting this one, other than to start removing parts and inspecting them until you find a smoking gun.

    GN hitch?

Looks like it “should” be for a gooseneck hitch just based on location, but I don’t recognize it. Maybe it’s a homemade or farm built setup. Two things make me think that. First, there’s no provision for safety chains. Secondly, I don’t see any way for a pin, etc. to secure a ball in place. Do...

    Carrier/facet pump observations

All the mechanical lift pumps I’ve seen have bleed ports built in as well. Apparently it’s to keep the fuel from running into the crankcase in the event of a diaphragm failure. Not that it’s impossible for fuel to get in there, but conditions have to be a certain way for it to happen.

    Gp controller?

I would bet more than a few guys have twisted off the end of the #1 line not paying attention to that timing adapter.

    News on Big Red

I don’t think I’d put up with that kind of oil consumption. That’s pretty bad whether you’re talking 2 strokes or IDI’s.

Why 80% wmo and 20% gasoline?

I’m no expert here, but the formula that that calculator uses may not be very accurate for what you’re trying to figure out. If the formula is just averaging the viscosities based on the ratio, it’s ignoring the solvent effects of the gasoline. It would be pretty easy to perform some tests to...

I was also told to use a matchbook to set the stack height for clutches in an automatic transmission. All these jobs must have been tricky for mechanics that didn’t smoke.

Name the cause of this smokeshow - 6.9IDI+T

If I have to guess , I’d say it’s off a tooth. It’s really hard to see the marks with the front cover on. A flashlight and an inspection mirror might help. Take a look at this and see if it helps you wrap your mind around it.

    Electric vacuum pump

Here’s a couple of pics as promised. It looks like these little vacuum pumps got used on several different makes and models. I found an NOS Mopar pump from sparks surplus on eBay. Less than $50 shipped. It should be here in a couple of days. I’ve got a couple hundred miles on the Dorman so far...

    Truck stalls between shifting

Lots of guys swear by a fuel filter full of ATF, let it fun a few seconds to fill the IP with it and let it set over night. Also check that your idle isn’t set too low, and bear in mind while adjusting it that the factory tach may not be very accurate.

1993 7.3 idi knock or ping happening

It can get that knocking rattle if the timing is set too advanced. When you go full fuel, the cam on the throttle shaft advances the timing even more. Next step is set the timing with a meter.

Need help ASAP, truck is dead!

You can check and make sure the glow plugs aren’t staying on. It’s completely plausible that the contacts are welded in the relay. Otherwise I’d have the alternator tested. Oh, and do a thorough check for battery cables etc. shorted to ground. It sounds like a pretty serious draw on the...

    Electric vacuum pump

So, it’s in and working….mostly. I ordered a Dorman pump off of Amazon. I know Dorman has a reputation of being hit or miss, but I figured my odds were better than the obviously cheap Chinese junk. Anyway, it was dead on arrival but I wasn’t going to be deterred. I figured I would dig into it...
